Conversations with Jazlyn Gallego

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jazlyn Gallego.

Hi Jazlyn, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I started working in the nonprofit field and realized that so many of the causes that I was working on were connected and began to become aware of the importance of public policy. After briefly leaving the nonprofit arena to work on political campaigns, I continued to see a huge overlap. VoteRiders provided a perfect opportunity to provide a service to the community like in my previous nonprofit work while also being able to reach a wide audience and discuss the importance of civic participation.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Overall, public apathy remains a struggle in terms of communicating the importance of voting as well as the challenges that are faced by voters that do not have an ID. Many people assume that because they have an ID that all others do as well. However, there are many situations where people have IDs that get damaged, lost, stolen, or expired. Providing an understanding of these obstacles is the first step in combatting them.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am the State Outreach Director and Florida Coordinator at VoteRiders. My role requires building partnerships in target states around the country as well as leading our program in the state of Florida. In addition to building relationships with other nonprofits, I oversee our volunteers, day-to-day operations, and one on one assistance with voters that need ID. I am most proud of the moments when I am able to help individuals that need ID to be relieved from dire circumstances such as those that need ID to secure housing or medical attention and then hear that they want to share their stories through their vote.
