Conversations with Erika Spence

Today we’d like to introduce you to Erika Spence.

Hi Erika, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Growing up, I always wanted to be an artist.

The common response was “artists don’t make enough money to support themselves”, and so I looked at other paths. It wasn’t until college when I really sat down and looked at my future that I decided I wanted to make it a reality. I started an internship with Marina Dunbar, an artist based in Charleston, S.C., who taught me that my goals are achievable, I just have to be willing to put in the time and work.

In March of 2021, I launched my website and a mini-series to great success; all paintings were sold in the day. After I graduated, I moved to Jacksonville, and here is where I continue my art business.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
One thing I struggle with the most is balancing a full-time job and my art business. I find time after hours and on the weekends to relax and do what I enjoy most.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I specialize in landscapes in oil or acrylic. However, oil is my preferred medium. I do commission work in-between projects, but my original pieces are always connected to nature. I have a deep love for the world around us and seek to capture it.

How do you define success?
Success, to me, is defined by the positive impact you create.
