Today we’d like to introduce you to Brianna Knisely.
Hi Brianna, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started drawing when I was very young. I credit my mom for taking me to classes where I could develop my artistic skills outside of traditional public school art programs. Lucky for me, she has always supported my growth in the creative world. I moved from Missouri to Florida when I was 21 as a restaurant server and bartender. I’ve just recently made the connection between my early days as an artist and my current identity as an emerging artist.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Relatively speaking, it’s been a pretty smooth road with a few potholes. For instance, I had trouble finding employment at the beach when I first moved to the area. Lucky for me, a Mexican restaurant took me in and helped me get up on my own feet! Creatively, I run into corners at times with my passion for exploration as I continue to dive deeper into select mediums.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My eclectic lifestyle sets me apart from others and always has. I’ve been told that there’s no telling what direction I’ll turn to next. I have traversed acrylic painting, watercolor, mural painting, jewelry design and construction, surface pattern design, zine making, collage work, charcoal pencil, oil pastel, and even music. I am thankful to have perspective from all disciplines I’ve been involved with to forge ahead with only the outlets that resonate the highest with my form of creativity.
Networking and finding a mentor can positively impact one’s life and career. Any advice?
Networking is super important in the creative business. Anyone reading this who wants to make connections, I would advise to tell people who you are and what you do. No one is going to make the assumption that you write music or paint just by meeting you, but if you introduce yourself as an artist that can spark a conversation. Conversations oftentimes lead to opportunities, so go ahead and announce your intentions to the world. Mentors can be found where you would expect to find them. For example, in specialized classes the main mentor is the instructor. More seasoned class members are valuable mentors as well, and by talking about the subject you may find you have insight to add to the conversation that otherwise would’ve gone unspoken.
