Conversations with Argie Mitra

Today we’d like to introduce you to Argie Mitra.

Hi Argie, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’ve always considered myself a creative spirit. Growing up, I loved dressing up, watching my grandma sew me outfits, and making them for my dolls. I would host art sales in my driveway and my brother’s friends bought them despite me writing “Sale $1” on half of the piece of paper. I feel pretty grateful for the support I’ve had for my art and design throughout my life, especially from my parents.

I received my Bachelor of Fine Arts from Jacksonville University studying painting, photography, and art history, but that was also where I was introduced to theatre and costume making. I also enjoyed studying philosophy and having the ability to immerse myself in the arts, including 3D art, music recitals, and editing the literary and arts magazine.

After graduating I started designing for myself, but in networking I found a lot of wardrobe styling positions. It was fascinating to me I could be involved in such different projects one day to the next, whether in a theater, on set, or at sea on a cruise.

This led me to having a deep appreciation for the crews and everything behind the scenes on productions of all sizes. Being with the community, especially those easy to work with, is the most valuable experience for me.

I started weightlifting and practicing yoga in 2017 and that has truly helped to shape my life today. I’m a certified pole instructor, 200-hr yoga teacher, and performer. It’s here I’ve found even more community where I can feel free to express myself another way creatively, share my sassy and sensual style of movement, and help others find their own style as well.

So if you’ve noticed, I enjoy doing a lot of different things. It absolutely has its challenges, and even though I’ve been told multiple times I can’t do everything, I love living my life bringing joy to as many people as possible.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Time management when you’re all on your own as an entrepreneur can be a challenge, but it’s helped me learn to say no more than yes. I will say that people try to warn me about designing custom wedding gowns and “bridezillas,” but I’ve always been lucky to have the kindest, coolest brides and clients who trust my process. That being said… *knocks on wood*

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Again, I do quite a few things—you have to as a freelancer sometimes—but as for “muggle” jobs, I’m an independent designer, stylist, and seamstress. While at home I’m working with clients on their alterations and custom designs, or on set styling or tailoring for productions. One of my main gigs is at sea, and I work as a Wardrobe Lead or Theatrical Stitcher making sure the singers and dancers look good on stage.

My favorite part of my job is listening to producers, other stylists, and performers and deciphering their needs to help them feel the most confident about their work. Over the years, I’ve developed an arsenal of the most random tips and tricks but I also love continuing to learn everyday. I don’t think I’ll ever stop learning. You have to operate with an open mind and open heart to best serve any production.

I also very much enjoy teaching yoga and performing, and look forward to when I can work more gigs into my schedule. Fire eating, pole dance, floorwork; and Lyra are my favorites and I always have so much fun interacting with audiences. I really hope I inspire people in some way so they can feel the same joy I get from doing all of the above.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
I think it’s so important to try to be kind to everyone. You never know what someone is going through.
