Today we’d like to introduce you to Adrian “Asia” Petty. Them and their team share their story with us below:
Adrian “Asia” Petty started an independent comic book publishing company in 2000 and the following year released the black and white comic book, “Teshuvah, Prophets of Jah”. After below modest returns, Director Adrian “Asia” Petty went through a self-imposed hiatus suggested by Lady Death creator, Brian Pulido.
Adrian returned in late 2008 with the preview issue of the genre-blending and audacious quasi superhero narrative, “Ms. Johnni”. Since then, Ms. Johnni has captured the interest of fans and critics alike with its introspective look at the main character in search of her missing daughter.
In June 2020, Jericho Projects partnered with publisher Markosia Enterprises based in London and published its first graphic novel, “Appalachian Assassin”. This 100-page book details the story of Jessie English, a southern bred special forces soldier, returning home from a mission after being left for dead.
He sets out to create an unexpected weapon against his betrayer by marrying and reshaping a cancer-riddled and abused young woman from a Tennessee holler named Jo Betty Morrow into an elite assassin.
In March 2022, Jericho Projects released “Dekadence and Avörya”, a photo novel following up on the adventures of Maxwell Lightfoot, the world’s newest demon hunter. Maxwell has recently struck out on his own after being trained by Darius Key, a former apostle, in Atlanta, GA.
Maxwell’s past has caught up with him as he was abandoned by his family and friends and left to barely get by working at a pizza parlor in Tuscaloosa, AL, with an antagonistic co-worker, Megan. His problems are increased as a supernatural being, Rhumme, has obtained permission from Jalene, the Highest, to obtain his soul.
With only the new angel, Avörya, as an ally, Maxwell walks the line between life and death. Darius Key is a follow-up on the previous photo novel “(Who is) Darius Key?”
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There is no such thing as a smooth road for a business start-up. We have had to deal with people who didn’t follow through on commitments and dropped out of projects.
Also when you are in the comic book business and you’re not selling well-known properties like Batman and the X-Men, simply garnering any interest in what you do is an uphill battle. The reality is no one cares about you or your books when you are an independent publisher so you must be creative and persistent in how you promote yourself.
Ego is also something that must be taken under consideration when you have to admit that something isn’t working business-wise or creatively. You need to have the humility to mistakes and make adjustments. And of course, financial issues are always a constant challenge.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
We are Jericho Projects and we are known for independent comic books and graphic novels. We tell superhero and supernatural narratives with a twist and use both traditional illustration means as well as using photography.
Our mission statement is: Unhinged, untapped, and untold.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
1. If you think that you need $1000 to start up, save up $2000. You will always need more capital than you think you will.
2. Have a clear written out plan and start with the end in mind. Accomplish small milestones and get larger until you reach that end goal. Be humble, persistent, and focused.
3. Challenges will occur so be prepared to adjust and control your perspectives while not allowing the situation to control you.
4. Your perspective determines your outcome and doesn’t look for an exit ramp once you start. Successful people do what unsuccessful people don’t do.
