Community Highlights: Meet Samuel Ramos of Fade Zone Barbershop

Today we’d like to introduce you to Samuel Ramos.

Samuel , we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’m originally from Bayamón, Puerto Rico, and I started cutting hair in 1999 when I was just 11 years old. At first, it was simply out of curiosity.

In 2001, my mother passed away, and in 2002 I moved to Jacksonville, Florida, to live with my uncles. When I arrived, I noticed there weren’t many Hispanic barbers in the area, and that’s when the idea of becoming a barber really started to grow in me.

I began cutting hair in a small room at my uncle’s house, and within about six months, I already had several clients—mostly neighbors and friends from school.

In 2004, I moved back to Puerto Rico, where I was able to truly sharpen my skills and become more professional. Puerto Rico has incredible barbers, and I believe some of the best in the world, which really helped me grow.

In 2016, I returned to Jacksonville with the mindset of establishing myself as a professional barber in the city where my passion was born. This is the city that adopted me as a barber.

Today, by God’s grace, I own two barbershops called Fade Zone Barbershop. I’m very grateful to the Jacksonville community for trusting me from day one. This city is full of entrepreneurs, and I truly believe that if you have dreams and goals, Jacksonville is a place where they can become reality.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Like any entrepreneurial journey, I’ve faced many challenges along the way.

One of the biggest struggles was starting from scratch in a new city, with limited resources and no established name. I had to build my clientele one cut at a time, prove myself every day, and stay consistent even when business was slow.

I also faced personal challenges, including losing my mother at a young age and having to mature early and stay focused on my goals. There were moments of doubt, financial pressure, and long hours, but I never lost sight of my purpose.

Every struggle taught me discipline, patience, and resilience. Those challenges are what shaped me into not just a better barber, but a better entrepreneur and person.

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
I truly believe that no success is achieved alone. There are many people who deserve credit for where I am today.

First and foremost, my family has played a huge role in my journey. During the hardest moments of my life, they never gave up on me and always supported my dreams. I’m especially grateful to my uncle, Javier Rosa, and my aunt, Susana Aponte, who opened their home to me, believed in me from the very beginning, and gave me the support and motivation I needed to keep going.

I also want to give special credit to my wife, Stephanie Cortes, who has been my biggest supporter, my partner, and my motivation. She has stood by me through every challenge, every risk, and every long day, and her belief in me has pushed me to become a better man, a better leader, and a better business owner.

I’m also extremely thankful for my clients and the Jacksonville community. They trusted me before I had a big name, before I had shops, and even before I had everything figured out. Their loyalty and word-of-mouth support helped me build my brand one client at a time.

Lastly, I give credit to the barbers I’ve worked with throughout the years. Each one has contributed something to my growth, whether through technique, discipline, or mindset. Being around talented people pushed me to elevate my craft and become better not only as a barber, but as a business owner and leader.

All of these people—my family, my wife, mentors, teammates, and clients—are a big part of the success of Fade Zone Barbershop. I wouldn’t be where I am today without them.
