Community Highlights: Meet Logan Andrews of Andrews Healthcare Consulting

Today we’d like to introduce you to Logan Andrews.

Hi Logan, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started out as the Director of nursing at a long-term care facility. Eventually decided to become a nurse practitioner and open up my own group practice to help with the issue of limited access to quality healthcare in our rural area. When I was working in the long-term care facility, I found that many patients discharged and were unable to follow up with a primary care provider due to multiple issues whether that be lack of transportation, distance, or inability to leave their home due to being homebound. I started doing house-calls as a primary care nurse practitioner, then eventually we added psychiatric mental healthcare services as well. Fast-forward to today and from 2021 till now, we have a little over 6000 patients, 26 providers, and serve over 21 counties throughout rural Florida.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Definitely not! One of the hardest issues that we have faced has been insurance credentialing and contracting. Most insurance companies do not recognize autonomous nurse practitioners as a primary care provider. Most say they can only credential or contract physicians. But autonomous nurse practitioners are able to work Without being under the direct supervision of a physician and we can do everything that a physician can legally do in our designated Specialty. For example, my specialty is family so that means everything I can do is equivalent to a family physician. Another thing that we struggle with is payment from insurance companies as we are paid at a lower rate than physicians, generally 85% of the Physician fee schedule, even though we do not get a 15% discount on staffing costs, utilities, or any other expenditures required to running a practice. Other issues that were faced with ability to find other providers willing to do house-calls and being able to refer a lot of these homebound patients to specialists. That is where telehealth has been very useful!

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
at Andrews Healthcare Consulting. We provide in-home primary care and in-home psychiatric mental healthcare services. We are a multi specialty group of nurse practitioners with specialties ranging from family medicine, adult, gerontology, wound care, psychiatric, and mental healthcare. We even have licensed clinical social workers and licensed mental health counselors that are able to provide mental health counseling to those in need. What set us apart is we are providing all of the services that would traditionally take place in a standard doctors office/clinic right in the comfort of the patient’s home. This includes bloodwork, ultrasounds, x-rays, and even EKGs. Our patients do not have to leave their home for any of that! We accept most major insurances, Medicare, and even most Medicaid plans. We also offer telehealth services and specialty services such as weight loss and hormone replacement.

Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
One of the biggest resources to me as a nurse practitioner business owner has been the help that I have received from the National Nurse Practitioner , Entrepreneur Network (NNPEN), and the Florida Association of Nurse Practitioners (FLANP). I actually am the Florida ambassador for NNPEN and I am a large board member and the business ownership committee chair for FLANP. One thing that I started for FLANP is our Business Boot Camp, which is taking place this October 31 to November 1 in Orlando and is geared for nurse practitioners that are interested in opening their own private practice.
