Community Highlights: Meet Karen Simison of Clay Solar Installation Partners

Today we’d like to introduce you to Karen Simison.

Karen Simison

Hi Karen , so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’m Karen Simison, owner and Managing Director of Clay Solar Installation Partners in Middleburg, Florida. I started Clay Solar in 2022 with a clear goal: to give homeowners in Northeast Florida a better experience with solar installation and customer service. I saw too many people dealing with frustration—long waits, poor communication, or installations that didn’t live up to expectations—so I wanted to build a local company that focused on doing things right the first time, with transparency and real support.
In 2023, I partnered with and hired an experienced operations manager, and rebranded to Clay Solar Installation Partners (often called CSIP). This step allowed us to expand our capabilities, offer customers even better options for high-quality solar systems, and strengthen our focus on reliable, Florida-specific installations that handle our unique weather and roofing conditions.
Today, we’re a woman-owned, locally operated business serving Clay County, Duval, St. Johns, Nassau, and the greater Jacksonville area. We specialize in residential solar panel installations that help families lower their energy bills, gain energy independence, and do something positive for the environment—one roof at a time.
Beyond the business, I’m also a realtor, a mom, and someone who loves fitness, the beach, and my faith. Running Clay Solar Installation Partners lets me combine my passion for helping people with practical solutions to rising electricity costs here in Florida.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No, it definitely hasn’t been a completely smooth road — starting and growing a solar installation company in Northeast Florida comes with real hurdles, especially in a competitive and heavily regulated industry. When I launched Clay Solar in 2022, I quickly realized how fragmented and sometimes frustrating the solar experience could be for homeowners. My biggest early challenge was simply building trust in a market where customers had heard too many stories of aggressive sales tactics, hidden fees, delayed projects, or companies that disappeared after installation. As a new, woman-owned local business, I had to work harder to stand out and prove we were different — focused on transparency, quality workmanship, and genuine long-term customer support rather than just closing the deal.
One of the toughest ongoing struggles has been navigating the operational side of installations here in Florida. Permitting and utility interconnection processes can vary significantly from county to county (Clay, Duval, St. Johns, etc.), and delays on approvals or inspections sometimes push timelines back weeks or even months. We also deal with Florida-specific realities like preparing systems for hurricane season, handling varied roofing types and structural assessments, and managing the logistics of getting high-quality equipment to site on time.
Supply chain hiccups, fluctuating material costs, and keeping up with changing incentives and regulations have added complexity too. On top of that, as a smaller local company, balancing cash flow while scaling responsibly — especially when waiting on payments from larger projects or partners — has been a learning curve. I’ve had moments where I questioned the pace of growth, but staying committed to doing right by every customer has kept me grounded.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
Where We See the Solar Industry Heading in the Next 5–10 Years The solar industry is evolving rapidly, and at Clay Solar Installation Partners, we’re excited about the opportunities ahead for Northeast Florida homeowners — even as the landscape shifts. While the road won’t be entirely smooth, the long-term trends strongly favor cleaner, more resilient, and more affordable home energy solutions.
Big Shifts and Trends We’re Watching:

Solar + Battery Storage Becomes the Standard
Over the next 5–10 years, pairing solar panels with battery storage will move from “nice-to-have” to essential. As utilities face growing evening peak demand and potential grid strain (especially during Florida’s hurricane season), homeowners will increasingly want backup power, greater energy independence, and the ability to maximize their own solar production instead of exporting excess at lower rates. Battery costs continue to drop, and integrated systems will offer better resilience and smarter energy management.
Technology Advancements Drive Better Performance
Solar panels are getting more efficient. We’re seeing rapid progress in perovskite-silicon tandem cells and other next-generation technologies that could push efficiencies well beyond today’s typical 20–23%. This means more power from the same roof space — a big advantage in Florida where roof real estate and hurricane-rated designs matter. Equipment will also become more durable and better suited to our intense sun, heat, and storms.
Changing Incentives and Financing
The federal 30% Investment Tax Credit (ITC) for residential solar ended after 2025, which is creating a short-term adjustment period for the industry. We expect a potential slowdown in some markets in 2026, followed by adaptation. Third-party ownership and new financing models will likely grow, and Florida’s strong utility-scale solar push (with companies like FPL planning massive expansions) should help stabilize and grow overall renewable infrastructure. Net metering policies may evolve toward more time-of-use rates or self-consumption incentives, making smart system design even more important.
Florida-Specific Growth and Grid Evolution
Florida is positioned to become one of the nation’s top residential solar states in the coming years. Utilities are adding significant solar and storage capacity, and renewable energy’s share of the state’s power mix is projected to rise substantially by 2030–2034. At the same time, rising electricity demand (from population growth, EVs, and home electrification) will make rooftop solar an even smarter hedge against future rate increases. Local challenges like permitting variations and hurricane resilience will remain, but they also create opportunities for truly Florida-tuned installations.
Focus on Local, Reliable Service
As national players and financing options shift, homeowners will value trusted local installers more than ever. The industry will consolidate around companies that deliver quality workmanship, transparent communication, and long-term support rather than just the lowest upfront price.

What This Means for Our Customers and Our Brand
At Clay Solar Installation Partners, we’re optimistic. These changes reinforce why we started: to provide honest, high-quality, Florida-specific solar solutions that deliver real savings and peace of mind. We’re committed to staying ahead of technology trends, designing systems for our unique climate, and helping families navigate whatever policy or financing shifts come next.
We believe the next decade will bring more energy independence to Northeast Florida homes — lower long-term bills, better storm resilience, and a cleaner environment. Solar won’t disappear; it will mature into a core part of home infrastructure, much like air conditioning or plumbing did in previous generations.
Our mission stays the same: do it right the first time, support our neighbors long after installation, and make the transition to solar straightforward and trustworthy.
If you’re thinking about solar now or in the coming years, the fundamentals remain strong — especially here in the Sunshine State. We’d love to walk you through what the evolving landscape means for your specific home and goals.
