Today we’d like to introduce you to Jordan Murray.
Alright, thank you for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us how you got started?
Initially, I thought I didn’t have a unique enough story to share, but my story is fun in that “safe and sound” way. So my story doesn’t start in the trenches of life with horrible experiences that I rose above. I am just a normal person with normal problems who worked hard and can now help others. I had hardships and struggles, but nothing Hallmark movie worthy. I was enjoying life and tackling my problems in a beautiful display of venting and frustration while just getting it done. I’ve been fortunate to work hard and land a great job right out of school. I started as a blogger for all things “adulting.” Like any other millennial, I wanted to share my knowledge and help people via the blog. I wrote about various topics, including Finance, Fitness, and careers. This was when I was getting my master’s, so it was a lot of work, but I enjoyed it. I kept seeing many career and career path questions and narrowed my focus to helping people with their careers. I ended up working in HR and wanted to share that knowledge of career advancement. I shifted into becoming a career and confidence coach after researching how I could turn to help people into a legit business. I didn’t know what coaching was about 2-3 years ago. The world/internet is a small yet big place! I learned about coaching and how to coach from the comfort of my own home, lol. As a career and confidence coach, I aim to help people find more fulfilling roles and land them. I have done one-on-one coaching (I still do), and I am now moving into courses that help me to help more people, which I love! Simple concept, but so many people hate their jobs that I want to change the narrative. I have been able to work with some amazing people who were dedicated to climbing that career ladder and finding their fulfilling roles. It’s fun, and I enjoy it!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road has been bumpy! I decided to start a business, go back to school, start looking for a house, get married, and get my life together within 2 years. I am the type of person who can’t “chill,” as my husband says. I am the laziest, most productive person you will ever meet. I want to sit around and watch tv, but I have to force myself not to be “productive” and to slow down. This meant that my focus was in 18 different directions, and I will tell you that the business (among other things) suffered. I did all the things that weren’t helping my clients or me at first. Messing with logos and websites is not helping your clients reach $5k or more salary increases. I did everything that coaches warned me not to do, partly because I didn’t know but also because I was stubborn. The road wouldn’t have been so bumpy if I chose to invest in myself and my goals from the beginning, found a coach I meshed with, and then rode the trail to power and glory. Or something along those lines! I went through phases of doubting myself and if I could coach. I could get results for myself, but could I get results for others was the question. When I had my first success story, I could do a happy dance and realize that I was the sh*t and knew what I was talking about. So yes, the road was bumpy, but it’s been fun looking back at how far I have come in business and life.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
My business is called Boss Life in Progress, a coaching company geared toward those who want to change careers but don’t know how to break into a new industry without starting from the bottom. The mission is to help professionals find more fulfilling jobs, so they wake up happy with purpose, passion, and a paycheck! I specialize in changing careers and promoting effective leadership principles to serve teams better. I do this through one-on-one coaching and courses, where I teach both the mindset and technical aspects of job searching, leadership, and career advancement. We work on imposter syndrome, corporate navigation, and articulating value. On the more technical side, we work on resumes, interview skills, and LinkedIn. I said in a previous answer that I don’t know how to chill, but weirdly I am the most chill person in terms of being around others.
I am not stuffy and buttoned up. I don’t like dressing up but will if I have to. I am always thinking and putting myself in the shoes of my students. I want to work with ambitious people who want to make things work. If I can always work with people like that, that would be great. I had a student land a significant salary increase from a new job offer, and I jumped up and down like a crazy person. It’s that deep for me! I am most proud of just being me and how my brand isn’t about me but the students I serve and the people who can land jobs and build careers from it. Career coaching is for everyone and can help you find your way and elevate your career. In terms of offerings, I have one-on-one coaching and a course called Career Goals Academy. Both options are great, and I encourage people to check them out.
Can you talk to us about happiness and what makes you happy?
I love spending time reading and working on my craft; My friends, family, and husband make me happy; Helping people land amazing jobs makes me happy. I enjoy traveling and having fun because it’s fun!
