Community Highlights: Meet Chad Abernathy of Cone and Cream

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chad Abernathy

Hi Chad, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
We started in 2015 as the Nitrogen Creamery dessert truck. We have served all over Florida in that time. We’ve had the privilege to serve at some great events. From serving dignitaries, TedX, Jags QB Trevor Lawrences birthday party, Lynard Skynyrd’s farewell tour, to the Jaguars VIP party. As well as numerous charitable events annually. We are very thankful for the support shown to us over the years. Last year when we decided to rebrand our business to “Cone and Cream”, we knew it was going to be a challenge. We wanted to open a shop with a community feel to it. Where when you walked in you felt the excitement we feel everyday making and serving the best Ice Cream in Jacksonville.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Going into business for yourself is never easy. There are always ups and downs. You just have to save when times are good.
Some of the struggles when operating our first truck was constant maintenance issues. It was always something. It’s amazing that 1994 repurposed bread truck (Big Blu we called her) made it 9 years. More than once the power tripped while we were away, and we lost all of our product. Thankfully we saved and saved and purchased a newer, more reliable van that we converted into Little Blu in late 2022.

Of course, when covid hit right at the beginning of our 2020 season we took a big hit. We made it through by changing gears and focusing on our caterings and other methods to make ends meet.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
We are a small batch Ice Cream shop and Mobile Ice cream business in Jacksonville Florida. We source our dairy from local Florida farms. Made fresh daily, our ice cream is some of the creamiest you can get. Some of our most popular flavors are our Butter Pecan, Toasted Coconut (vegan), Honey Cinnamon, and Chocolate covered Strawberry. We also bake our brownies and cookies in house. We are family owned and operated.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
I always showed an interest in cooking. I wasn’t into sweets that much though.

Pricing:

  • Ice Cream $3.99 – 7.99
  • Shakes 7.99
