Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Kearson.
Alex, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’ve been in the water damage and mold industry for over 24 years now. I got started early on working hands-on in the field, learning the technical side of drying structures, identifying moisture issues, and understanding how mold actually develops in buildings. Over time, I realized that a lot of companies were focused more on speed and volume rather than truly understanding the problem and educating the client.
That realization shaped the direction of my career. I made a decision to focus not just on doing the work, but on doing it the right way—based on building science, proper assessment, and clear communication with the homeowner.
Eventually, I founded Omega Environmental with the goal of creating a company that puts education, transparency, and quality first. We’re not just there to “clean it up”—we help people understand what happened, why it happened, and how to prevent it from happening again.
Over the years, I’ve earned multiple industry certifications, as well as Florida state licenses as both a Mold Assessor and Mold Remediator. That allows us to approach projects from both sides—identifying the problem and properly correcting it.
Today, Omega Environmental serves homeowners and property managers throughout Jacksonville and the surrounding areas. We handle everything from small moisture issues to complex mold and water damage projects, and we’ve built our reputation on being honest, thorough, and reliable.
At the end of the day, what drives me is helping people through situations that are often stressful and unfamiliar, and making sure they feel confident that their home is safe again
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Not at all, it definitely hasn’t been a smooth road, but that’s been part of what shaped both me and the business.
Like a lot of people in this industry, I started out doing the work hands-on, and early on, you quickly realize that this is not a simple business. You’re dealing with people in stressful situations, insurance companies, tight timelines, and sometimes genuinely hazardous environments. Learning how to manage all of that while still delivering high-quality work was a challenge in itself.
One of the biggest struggles has been navigating the gap between doing things the right way versus how some parts of the industry operate. There are many companies that cut corners or oversell services, which can create confusion for homeowners. Staying committed to being honest, transparent, and technically accurate—even when it’s not the easiest or most profitable route, has been a conscious decision the entire way.
Building the business itself also came with challenges. Growth, marketing, hiring the right people, and maintaining consistent quality across every job takes constant attention. There’s no autopilot in this field.
On top of that, educating clients has been both a challenge and a responsibility. Most people don’t understand water damage or mold until they’re dealing with it firsthand, so taking the time to explain the situation clearly and guide them through the process has always been a big part of what we do.
Looking back, those challenges were necessary. They forced me to really understand the industry at a deeper level and build a company that operates with integrity, not just efficiency.
As you know, we’re big fans of Omega Environmental. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Omega Environmental is a water damage restoration and mold remediation company based in Jacksonville, Florida. We specialize in mold assessments, mold remediation, water damage restoration, and indoor air quality investigations for both residential and commercial properties.
What we really do, at the core, is solve moisture problems correctly. Mold is almost always a symptom of a larger issue, whether it’s a hidden leak, a humidity imbalance, or a building envelope failure. Our approach is to identify the root cause, document it clearly, and then correct it in a way that’s both effective and defensible from a technical and regulatory standpoint.
What sets us apart is our emphasis on education, transparency, and technical accuracy. Many companies focus on selling a service. We focus on helping the client understand exactly what’s happening in their home or building. That includes explaining lab results, moisture readings, and the “why” behind every recommendation we make. We don’t believe in unnecessary work, and we’re very straightforward about what needs to be done, and just as importantly, what doesn’t.
Another key difference is that I hold both a Florida Mold Assessor license and a Mold Remediator license, as well as multiple IICRC certifications. That allows us to approach projects from both sides—investigation and correction—which gives our clients a more complete and accurate solution. It also allows us to produce clear, well-documented reports that are often used in real estate transactions, insurance claims, and, at times, more complex situations.
Over the years, we’ve worked on thousands of projects, ranging from small residential concerns to large, complex contamination issues. Regardless of the job’s size, our goal is always the same: to restore the environment to a safe, healthy condition and ensure the client feels confident in the outcome.
What I’m most proud of, from a brand standpoint, is the trust we’ve built. Most of our work comes from referrals—past clients, real estate professionals, and property managers who know that we’re going to show up, be honest, and do the job right.
If there’s one thing I’d want readers to know, it’s this: if you’re dealing with water damage or suspect mold, don’t ignore it and don’t rush into a decision. Get good information first. When you understand the problem, the solution becomes much clearer, and that’s where we come in.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
That’s a great question, and it’s actually a really interesting time for this industry because it’s evolving fast.
Over the next 5–10 years, I think we’re going to see a shift from reactive remediation to proactive environmental management. Historically, most of our work has been responding to problems after they happen, such as water damage, mold growth, or indoor air quality complaints. Going forward, there will be much greater emphasis on prevention, using technology to identify moisture issues before they become full-blown problems.
One of the biggest drivers of that is technology. We’re already seeing IoT-based moisture and humidity sensors that can monitor a building in real time and alert property owners to leaks or elevated humidity levels before mold develops. I think that becomes much more mainstream, especially in commercial buildings and higher-end residential properties.
Another major shift is the continued focus on indoor air quality (IAQ). People are more aware than ever of how their indoor environment affects their health, and that awareness is only growing. That’s going to expand the industry beyond just “mold removal” into broader environmental consulting—looking at ventilation, filtration, humidity control, and overall building performance.
We’re also seeing a push toward less invasive and more advanced remediation methods. Improved HEPA filtration, targeted cleaning methods, and better containment strategies are making it possible to solve problems with less demolition. At the same time, there’s a strong trend toward eco-friendly, non-toxic antimicrobial solutions, which clients are increasingly requesting.
From a business standpoint, the industry itself is growing. Demand is being driven by increased awareness of health risks, aging buildings, and more frequent severe weather events, especially in places like Florida. At the same time, I think we’ll see more regulation and higher standards, which will separate companies that are properly trained and credentialed from those that aren’t.
If I had to sum it up, the future of this industry is about becoming more data-driven, health-focused, and prevention-oriented. The companies that adapt to that by embracing technology, improving their technical understanding, and focusing on education are the ones that will lead the way.
From my perspective, that’s a positive shift. It elevates the industry and ultimately leads to better outcomes for homeowners and building occupants.
