Today we’d like to introduce you to Tyrell Murray.
Hi Tyrell, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Hair and beauty was a major part of my childhood. My mom was a cosmetologist, and all of my cousins were braiders, so from an early age I knew that the beauty industry was something I wanted to be a part of.
Growing up, I would constantly watch my mom and cousins do hair. Sometimes my sister, Tyra, would help finish the ends of braids or assist my mom with quick weaves. Eventually, she became really talented at hairstyling. I tried doing hair myself, but my work never seemed to compare to hers.
One day, I saw my sister in the bathroom trying to do her eyebrows. I jokingly said, “I bet I can do them better than you.” Of course, she quickly responded, “No, you can’t.” That was all I needed to hear—I was determined to be better than her at something.
At the time, I was entering high school as a freshman. Makeup wasn’t nearly as popular as it is today. Most people would go to MAC, spend about $60, get a mini makeover, and that was the extent of it.
So I started secretly borrowing my sister’s makeup, taking it to school, and practicing on my friends. What started as curiosity quickly turned into a passion.
After high school, I remember my mom giving me seven days to figure out what I was going to do with my life. At that time, I didn’t feel like college was the right path for me. I didn’t know much about entrepreneurship, but I knew I wanted to be successful in whatever I chose to pursue.
The more I focused on becoming the best makeup artist I could be, the more opportunities began to open up. I became the Royal Court Makeup Artist for Jean Ribault Senior High School. Soon after, other schools began reaching out. The dance team at William M. Raines High School became clients of mine, along with many others throughout the community.
As my career continued to grow, I was given the opportunity to open my very own salon. That’s when the name Touched By Ty Studios was born.
I couldn’t believe that at just 22 years old, I had become a salon owner.
While building my business, I continued providing makeup services for pageant contestants throughout Duval County high schools. Those experiences eventually inspired me to expand my expertise into pageant coaching.
One thing about me is that I am a student at heart. Whenever I want to do something, I study it as much as possible. That mindset led me to create The House of Touched By Ty (TBT).
My vision was to create a place where young people could freely express who they are—a true home away from home. A place where they could grow in confidence while preparing to compete in their high school pageants and pursue their goals.
This year marks six years of coaching and mentoring young people in pageantry, and I honestly don’t see myself stopping anytime soon.
I count it all joy that God has chosen me to be a vessel for the generations that will come after me. I take pride in using the gifts and talents He has given me to help others discover more about themselves, build confidence, and embrace their unique purpose.
Makeup artist, pageant coach, image consultant, mentor, and inspirational speaker are just a few of the hats I wear. But above all, I am passionate about helping others become the best version of themselves.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
One of my biggest struggles was being so young and accomplished. It created a lot of expectations for myself and from others. Sometimes I felt pressure to keep living up to what I’d already achieved, and that wasn’t always easy. It taught me a lot about balancing ambition with personal growth.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
