Today we’d like to introduce you to Tony Munoz.
Hi Tony, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My name is Tony Munoz. I’m a resident of Jacksonville, Florida, and a licensed general contractor and roofing contractor. My career started about 20 years ago doing value-add construction on many of the once-beautiful, now neglected homes across Jacksonville.
Along that journey, I really wanted to professionalize what we were doing. We were in a position to raise capital for more projects, and many of our investors told us they’d invest more if we were licensed. That prompted me to obtain both my general contractor license and my roofing contractor license.
The reality for me is that I look at these projects very much the same way I look at my life.
I’m a family man. I have three children and a partner who’s been with me for a long time. My life wasn’t always beautiful, I’m someone who, at one point, struggled deeply with alcoholism. Today, I’m in recovery and have been for close to 10 years.
That perspective shapes how I approach my work. I look at every project through a lens of restoration and recovery, how I can give back to Jacksonville and to the community by restoring a property, an exterior, or a roof to the luster it once had.
So, that gives you some visibility to my life, from someone who struggled with alcoholism to someone focused on building, remodeling, and renovating homes, one roof or one siding project at a time.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Listen, construction is a hard business. I’m a big believer that, knowing how hard it is, it’s incredibly important to align myself with people who make the hard easier. That’s why we’re very diligent about who we bring onto our team, making sure they match not just the energy and pace that construction demands, but also the humanitarian spirit we value as an organization.
When I first started, we really prioritized people based on their ability to do the job. Today, that’s still important, of course, but just as important is how they do it. Do they bring a sense of inclusion and belonging? Are they true team players? Do they fit and contribute to our culture?
Because the reality is, there are a lot of contractors out there, and a lot of people do good work. But I believe culture eats strategy for breakfast. That’s the reason we’re able to overperform for our customers, everyone on our team is anchored to the customer experience. We don’t cut corners, and we don’t leave loose ends. We make sure the customer gets exactly, or more than, what they anticipated.
So no, it hasn’t been smooth sailing. It’s taken many years to develop this mindset, focusing on bringing in good people first, not just people who’ve been in construction for a long time.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
We are Martin Home Exteriors.
We take a lot of pride in the fact that we’ve been around for 30 years. We’ve been serving Jacksonville since 1995. We’re known for our ability to recreate the exterior of a home, including siding and roofing.
We’ve partnered with some of the best manufacturers, and we’re certified with all of them, specifically James Hardie, where we’re an elite contractor. And that really just means we’ve done a lot of installations, we’ve completed over 4,000 over the last 30 years. We’re also certified with GAF, which is one of the premier and most reputable shingle manufacturers in the country.
I think we’re known for providing exceptional quality, incredible craftsmanship, and ultimately a fair pricing model. We’re not a company that starts high and then discounts—we believe the first price we give is one we feel very comfortable with. Ultimately, the customer wins by getting as much or more value than what they’re paying for, while also allowing us to continue running a profitable business. Those are margins that need to be protected.
At the same time, we’re over-communicators with our customers. We like to integrate them into the entire build process so they feel a part of it, versus a lot of contractors who aren’t as open to that level of dialogue.
We have our own in-house design team, and our crews have, on average, about 15 years of experience in their trades. We take a lot of pride in having people who are incredibly qualified to add value. For us, it’s not just about enhancing the look of a home -we do that very well- but it’s also about adding real value to the property.
We often tell our customers that once the siding installation is complete, we feel very confident they can set a new market comp for what a home in their neighborhood sells for. That’s a big part of what we aim to deliver.
On the residential side, we do siding (both fiber cement and vinyl), windows and roofing, including shingle and tile systems. On the commercial side, we do metal panel roofing, as well as TPO, EPDM, and other single-ply membrane systems that are common across Jacksonville.
Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
I mean, as far as what influences me and really gives me direction, it’s the most read and most published book in the world, the Bible. I’m a man anchored in my faith. In my previous life, dealing with addiction and alcoholism, it was really turning to God, listening and asking Him to remove that obsession. And once that happened, I don’t think anything else can come close to what God has done in my life.
If we’re talking about something more practical, I do like Tony Robbins. I also like Tim Ferriss. But overall, I’m just a very positive thinker.
I don’t really have an allegiance to any one person, everyone has their own flavor. What works for me might not work for someone else. But as long as you’re anchored in doing things for the greater good, making the community around you better, and listening to people who inspire you to do more, there’s really no right or wrong when it comes to who you follow or what you listen to.
