Today we’d like to introduce you to Taiwan Ferguson.
Hi Taiwan, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
I’ve always been moved by music and how it affects culture or groups of people. I was motivated to write after seeing my favorite artist during a tough time. After a time served away, I came home and worked towards making myself a staple in Hip Hop and positively affecting my community. Since 2019 I’ve become an Instagram micro-influencer by constantly releasing new music with an aggressive poetic style, earning independent record label deals (has not been signed), and gaining a following that allows me the opportunity to travel for music. My team and I are forming a non-profit organization for Prison Reform to help transform incarceration into rehabilitation.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been smooth?
Not smooth at all. I went through a time of trying to understand my emotions and expressing myself with anger. This caused me to be in situations and altercations. I lost other opportunities like athletic scholarships and found trouble with the law.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a Rapper and Hip Hop artist. I’m easily known for my back-and-forth style, wordplay, and, most of all, my story telling. I have a unique way of taking my experiences and everyday views and painting a vivid picture. What makes me different is that having a family from New York, I grew up listening to other artists that I didn’t hear at home in the South. This allowed me to blend that distinct Southern Hip Hop sound with an up north verbally attacking lyrical flow.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
Every summer as a kid, my sisters and I went to New York and lived with my other family as soon as school ended. They wanted us to understand and see where they come from and understand other cultures. It opened my mind to accepting other views and ways of life.
