Today we’d like to introduce you to Sydney Roessling.
Hi Sydney , we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Photography has been part of my life for as long as I can remember. When I was the little girl, I was constantly taking photos mostly of nature. (Hints that’s where my style today come in.) Bold, colorful and storytelling. This is where it really began.
In 2017, that childhood passion turned into a business. But the real shift happened after I got married to my high school sweetheart in 2016. We were young, building our life together, and like many young couples, money was tight. One thing we couldn’t make work was hiring a wedding photographer. It was the only regret I carried from that day. That experience changed something in me. I became deeply interested in photographing people and preserving moments in a way that felt accessible and meaningful.
My granny believed in me early on she offered to buy my first professional camera with one condition: I had to turn it into something profitable. That belief lit a fire. What started as a side business while I was in college and working full time at the hospital slowly grew into something much bigger than I imagined.
After more than 10 years working in healthcare in 2021 I felt a deep gut feeling to take the leap into photography full time. I still remember calling my husband on my break and telling him I was thinking about leaving. Without hesitation he said, “Do it. We’ll figure it out.” That kind of support changes everything. That Monday I turned in my resignation. Since then I haven’t looked back.
This year, I’m celebrating 5 years as a full-time photographer. I’ve been nominated for Best of St. Augustine, published multiple times, photographed clients from across the United States and internationally, and captured everything from births to end of life moments and everything in between. The full spectrum of what it means to be human. Pausing moments to last a life time. I’ve had the honor of serving organizations like Fostering Connections and working with local preschools to bring a fresh, modern approach to school portraits.
This business is so much more than a career to me. It’s a dream I chose to chase. I give so much credit to my husband, my family, my best friend, my loyal clients, and my community. Their belief in me is what allowed me to follow my passion and make a living from it.
Always follow the gut and surround yourself with people who want only great things for you.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
From the outside, owning a business can look glamorous. You set your schedule, you follow your passion, you create for a living. But behind the scenes, it’s one of the most stretching and demanding journeys I’ve ever been on.
When you run your own business, you don’t just show up with a camera. You’re the CEO, the marketing department, the social media manager, the accountant, the creative director, the client coordinator and sometimes even tech support. You are constantly thinking about growth, visibility, finances, and innovation while still protecting your creativity. It’s a balancing act that requires discipline and resilience.
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that the creative industry can sometimes feel guarded. There’s often a sense of competition or “hush-hush” culture. Over time, I realized how important it is to intentionally find community and other photographers who believe there is more than enough opportunity for all of us. When you shift from competition to collaboration, everything changes. Supporting one another creates space for all of us to thrive.
On a personal level, learning to separate art from ego has been one of the hardest parts. As artists, our work feels deeply personal. When feedback comes, it can feel less like a business note and more like a stab wound. I’ve had to grow thick skin while keeping a soft heart and understanding that not everyone will connect with my style, and that’s okay. That’s actually the beauty of humanity. We all see the world differently.
Growth means making mistakes. It means evolving. It means learning how to look at your work not just as self expression, but as a service. That shift from creating for yourself to creating for clients takes maturity and perspective.
So no, it hasn’t always been smooth. But it has absolutely been worth it.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My work is rooted in life’s moments the big milestones and the quiet in between pauses that often mean the most. I believe memories shouldn’t be reserved only for major events. Everyday joy, subtle glances and small details.
I’m most known for my family sessions, elopements, and capturing the sky but I truly photograph across the spectrum of life. I’ve captured births, celebrations, quiet farewells, and everything in between. I don’t like limiting myself creatively because I believe possibility is where growth lives. Every season of life tells a different story, and I want to be there for all of it.
Affordability is also important to me. When I got married young, we couldn’t afford a wedding photographer and that experience shaped me deeply. I want my services to feel accessible because everyone deserves to have their memories documented.
What sets me apart is how I see the world. I don’t just look for the obvious moment I look for the pause. The way light hits the trees during a family session or the way the light hits someone’s eyes. The way a hand naturally reaches for another. The small environmental details that frame a memory in time.
Recently, after losing my pop, I was given boxes of old polaroid’s he had taken. Mostly back in the 60’s and 70’s. Many of them weren’t of “important” events they were simple moments he felt were worth preserving. Like horses, family dogs, farm equipment and many more. And those photographs became priceless. That experience reaffirmed something I’ve always believed; what feels ordinary today becomes extraordinary over time.
That perspective shapes how I shoot. Even when I’m photographing people, I still include pieces of nature anchoring the moment in place. Because one day, those quiet details will matter more than we realize.
What I’m most proud of isn’t just the images themselves it’s the trust people place in me to document their lives. That responsibility is something I hold with deep gratitude.
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
The most important lesson I’ve learned is to trust myself and to know my worth.
Imposter syndrome is very real, especially as a self taught artist. When you don’t come from formal training, it’s easy to question whether you belong in the room. Early on, I believed that capturing something beautiful was enough. That nature didn’t need much refining. But as I grew, I realized that editing, lighting, and technical mastery are part of honoring the art just as much as pressing the shutter.
Learning lighting without formal classes was intimidating. There were so many moments of trial and error, moments of frustration, and definitely moments of doubt. But each mistake became a lesson. Each challenge stretched me to my full potential.
What changed everything was shifting from seeking validation to building confidence in skill. Instead of asking, Am I good enough? I started asking, How can I get better?
That mindset transformed my work and my business.
I’ve learned that growth never really stops and that’s the beauty of it. The creative possibilities are endless. I choose to evolve daily so that I can show up fully for my clients and deliver work I’m genuinely proud of.
Trusting yourself isn’t a one time decision. It’s something you practice and that practice has been the most powerful part of my journey.
