Today we’d like to introduce you to Sidney Gills.
Hi Sidney, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Sidney Gills (A.K.A. Grandpa) 1st Degree Black Belt under Luiz Palhares. A Professor of the art with over 15 years’ experience. Sid came to Xequemate as a 4th degree Relson Gracie Purple Belt under Phil Cardella in 2019. He is a detail-oriented instructor and loves to roll and can still be found competing in major tournaments. After becoming an owner in 2022 Sid has been instrumental in our growth and expansion. Professor Sid is the Head Instructor for both kids and adults. He is a U.S. Army Veteran and has lived in the Jacksonville area for over 25 years raising his family.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Had to totally revamp the training curriculum when I became an owner. Over the last 4 years we have provided our clients with expert instruction in both sport and self defense jiu-jitsu. Biggest challenges for me is age. At 52 I’m not the spring chicken I used to be and all these 20 and 30 year old students bring new challenges daily. Retraining mindsets to get out of their primal brains and relax. Always training to be better over training to win. Winning will come in time.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I have been in the Heavy/Medium duty truck industry for 30years. Everything from a technician to a manager. Shaping and molding the next generation of mechanics in an ever evolving career field. After 30 years I can definitely say I am ready for change. However, it is hard to move on from something you do well.
What matters most to you?
My family and my dogs. Without them, nothing is worth it. I have spent my entire adult life working for them. Everyday, putting one foot in front of the other. Through failures and successes, my wife is always their for support.
