Today we’d like to introduce you to Mizzy RAW.
Hi Mizzy, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
For starters, my name is Mizzy Raw. I was born and raised in West Philadelphia. moving to Jacksonville, Florida when I was around 14 years old. As a kid growing up in Philly, I always was known for my raw talent whether it’s was boxing, playing basketball, or winning dance competitions.
Growing up as a kid, music was always a huge part of my life my favorites were Michael Jackson, Alicia keys, 50 Cents, Jay Z, and a lot of Philly artists of course. I began writing raps age 11. And would go over to my older friend’s house almost every day to show them my new raps, they really believed in me. Although I started to take music seriously when I moved to Florida.
In 2011, I started performing live at nightclubs and open mics to earn a name locally before getting opportunities to open for huge names such as Mac Miller, Twistaa, Bone Thugs N Harmony, MGK, Chief Keef, etc. I’ve been in all types of ciphers and freestyle battles you can think of. However, unfortunately, in 2014, I was shot in the stomach and pronounced paralyzed.
By the grace of God somehow the bullet just lodged in my spine and within 8 months, I was back up and walking which changed my mind and the way I create music. Between 2014 and now, I’ve lost my grandmother to cancer a ton of friends to gun violence and I just recently lost my mother.
From being a lyricist to a songwriter and killing any beat thrown my way my main focus and approach with my music today is telling my story, turning all my pain into passion, and touching the hearts of my followers, especially my fans that have grown with me over the years.
From Mizz to MIZZY RAW from when I was in high school running the streets, robbing people, and breaking into houses to now telling my story and giving back with my words. Knowing my music holds substance and purpose I realized it’s not just meant for the radios and club scene I’ve evolved from.
I see my music making an impact on hip-hop consumers the way J Cole, Kendrick Lamar, or Nipsey Hussle; I just got to take my time and stay true to everything it is I am doing and in due time.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I’ve been shot in the stomach live with the bullet in my spine for life but still able to walk. I’ve lost a lot of friends to gun violence.
I lost friendships over ego and pride. Recently, just lost my mother and at the beginning of this journey, I lost my grandmother to cancer.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am an artist/songwriter and lately, I have been designing clothes.
What separates me from most artists is the overall dedication and passion I display through my music and my work. I’m always compared to Kendrick Lamar and J Cole, or even Meek Mill; because of my freestyle and rap battle capabilities and background being a rapper from Philly coming up in Duval.
My stage presence and the way I carry myself as an artist is what I think captures anyone the most on top of me just being me and keeping it raw genuinely.
