Check Out Lisa Aubley’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lisa Aubley.

Hi Lisa, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was working as a nurse in an assisted living facility during the pandemic. At that time there was no visitors allowed and I watched the families struggle to see their loved ones . I was also taking care of my mom who has dementia and lives a few houses down. After 8 residents died I decided I didn’t want to potentially bring Covid home to my mom so I decided to remove myself from nursing. I started dabbling in art at home , I first started just doing paint pours then got bored with that . I needed more creativity. I started adding texture to my paintings which brought me to using resin to seal . Again needed to expand what I was doing and got interested in glass so I decided to research different glass I could use in my art . I made some angels for Christmas one year and gave them to family and friends. Everyone loved them and said I should sell them . I then decided to do a church arts and crafts festival and it was a big hit . My mom did it with me . I then started doing more art festivals and my mom would help me. She came with me to most festivals unless it was too hot or cold . People loved my art and asked if I did classes . I didn’t have a studio at that time but after many requests for classes I decided to open my own working studio . I have a studio now in San Marco and offer classes and also offer space for 5 other artists to create their art and also have classes . My mom is no longer able to do festivals with me but occasionally does attend a class .

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There are definitely ups and downs with attending art festivals. Deciding what to bring , will people like my work, setting up and weather .

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My art is definitely unique . Most people who come to my booth say they have never seen anything like it . I combine a lot of art mediums. I do impasto paintings which is an extremely thick acrylic paint . If I don’t like something about it I add to it. . I seem to always be adding glass because glass is so impressive and no 2 pieces are alike . It’s adds another layer to any art and it’s truly beautiful and unique. I also started incorporating dried flowers and fruit with glass and resin . These pieces are extremely popular and one of the most popular to do in class . I am know for my large tree of life which is all done in fire glass . Very beautiful piece and again no 2 are alike .

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I like the fact we have both the beach and the river . There are definitely 2 types of crowds depending on if you are near the ocean or river . I do art festivals near both . The beach locations live anything beach themed . When I am near the river they like the flowers and nature themed pieces . It’s definitely 2 totally different vibes depending on where you are .

I do wish Jax had more of the bigger art festivals. Whenever I go I central Florida for big art festivals other artists always ask why Jax doesn’t have a really good art festival since it’s so large . Fernandina
Has a couple good large art festivals and so does St. Augustine but Jax as big as it is does not .
