Today we’d like to introduce you to Isaac Fox.
Hi Isaac, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I grew up in the 90’s watching Toonami and the mainstream introduction of anime into the west. The stories those shows told helped me through some tough events growing up. This inspired me to write my own stories and, hopefully one day, help someone else in the way those stories helped me.
From there, I started writing as a hobby throughout high school and into college. It was in college I had a professor pull me aside and ask me what I wanted to do. I told him I wanted to write stories and, for the first time in my life, someone looked me dead in the eyes and said “You could do that.”
While in college, a friend of mine convinced me to come write for a game studio he’d started. Our project was ultimately purchased by a bigger company and I had to sign an NDA declaring I could never name the project, but this experience taught me what I was capable of. After graduating, I began working on a comic called Cremisi. It was a slow process as I was a fresh grad with no real income, connections, or knowledge of the industry. When it came to the business side of things, I got a bit lucky. While working as a retail manager, I befriended a retired Disney exec who invited me out onto his yacht and taught me a great deal about business.
While making comics, I was working in professional sports with groups like the NBA and the NHL. From this, I learned more about the entertainment industry. I founded Astral Ticket Comics and, after a few years of working myself to health complications with what was essentially two full-time jobs, made the choice to just do comics.
Recently, I started producing a new comic titled The Manti-Corps which has almost tied my flagship book and Jacksonville’s record-holder, SuccuBUSTED!, in popularity. I’m excited to see where this comic goes both on and off Kickstarter. Today, I continue writing comic books though my role has expanded beyond just writer to letterer, marketer, and more. It’s been a rough road and I can’t say it was always pleasant, but I’ve now got over 15 years of experience in professional entertainment and over 10 years in comic books. I would not trade this job for anything.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road thus far has been everything except smooth. I worked a full time job ontop of doing comics. Essentially, if I were not at my regular job, I was working on comics or something for Astral Ticket. During this time, I lost a great deal of friends and more because I was, as they worded it, “working all the time.”
While at Ancient City Con one year I had a gentlemen ask me how to get to where he could do comics as his only job. I pseudo-jokingly asked him if he had friends, went to events, played video games, or had a partner. He said he did, to which I replied “Get rid of them. You no longer have time.” He laughed, only for a Marvel artist next to me to lean over and say “Hey man, notice he’s not laughing about that and neither am I.”
Rough paths have taken many forms, from other creators to financial strains to physical health complications. Ultimately, I don’t consider my job work, I consider it an opportunity to do what I love.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
While I wear many hats as a small-business owner, I primarily say I’m an author. I write, edit, publish, and sell comic books for a living. My work has ranged from hard-hitting tales of PTSD and alcoholism to adult comedies to high-fantasy adventures.
My debut series was Cremisi, a space-western tale about an alcoholic spaceship captain self-medicating on liquor and running from his past. As a former heavy drinker and sufferer of PTSD, this was the story I initially wanted to tell. Cremisi currently has five issues out with a prequel, titled Pure Intent, finished at three issues. Cremisi contains heavy inspiration from Cowboy Bebop, Outlaw Star, and Trigun.
My most popular series is called SuccuBUSTED!. This is an ecchi, adult comedy about naughty demons and the folks who police them. The story takes place here in Jacksonville and follows federal agent Liam J. White as he attempts to solve a crime with his newly-appointed partner, Rita the succubus. Unfortunately for Liam, everything, and everyone, is hard when you’ve got a succubus following you around. The first arc just finished at four issues. The series tells two stories, one focusing on the budding relationship between Liam and Rita and another of a kinky yet healthy relationship between police chief Kimiko and the queen of succubi. This series is LGTBQ+ friendly.
I co-wrote a series titled Mistress Izumi’s ADULT Lessons alongside my community manager, Izumi Fox (no relation.) The name is a double entendre on the books subject matter. There are three “lessons” in this series with each using adult comedy to teach lessons adults should know how to do. Lesson #1 is about budgeting, lesson #2 is about automotive repair, and lesson #3 is about home plumbing repair. Each lesson has been approved by an industry professional as accurate and helpful. It’s almost comically common for people in my industry to be or have been teachers. As a former TEFL teacher, I wanted to do something educational but presented in a package my readers could enjoy.
I did a pinup series with my artists titled Foxxy Vacations 2022 and 2024. Writing was light in these as they were celebrations and showcases of the amazing artists and people I’ve met in my work. This was created as a thank you to my readers.
Recently, I started a new series called The Manti-Corps and I’m happy to say it’s been a huge hit. This is a high-fantasy series with a World War War I-esque setting detailing the adventures of a mixed-species squad. The war is used as a premise to send our party on two-issue long missions playing out like DND/Isekai adventures as opposed to a serious military story. I’d call it an adult comedy with some heavier themes of loss, trauma, and identity explored. The ecchi jokes and mature fun my work is known for are not only present, but amplified per feedback from my readers. Their first full mission, The Goblins Trap #1, will hit Kickstarter in either August or September.
What were you like growing up?
Growing up wasn’t exactly a fun experience. I had some trouble with events far beyond my childhood control. Both my body and spirit still bear the scars from those days. As a result, I was quiet and introverted. I was pulled aside several times in High School and even College to be questioned on why I didn’t talk.
I developed an interest in stories and would use them as escapes from the hellish realities I was faced with. After moving to Jacksonville, things got a little better but I was still uncomfortable around people. It wasn’t until college where I was forced into a leadership position did I learn what I was capable of.
