Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Berg.
Hi Alex, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
I made a huge career change 5 years ago from private wealth management to personal training, trying to find more fulfilling work. Having played sports my whole life and enjoyed fitness, paired with solid teaching skills, I knew fitness would be a significant pay cut but would improve my quality of life, which I cared much more about. I started as a trainer at a local gym and only knew a little. I started teaching clients the traditional training you see most people doing at any gym: Let’s grow your muscles and lose some fat. Let’s pay a little attention to your specific postural dysfunctions, the root causes of the pain you’re experiencing, and how to correct that. We will jump into the same exercises you see all over Instagram and people doing everywhere. I had just learned how much my clients were missing out on when I discovered a methodology of training on YouTube called Functional Patterns. I saw a way of training the body that respects that humans, like any other organism on earth, have primary functions we evolved to do and are supposed to do well: standing, walking, running, and throwing. Just like a fish’s primary function is to swim, I would prioritize teaching it how to swim better if I were to train a fish. Simple. This fascinated me and made so much sense, but better yet, this methodology had results to prove how much more effective and healthy it was for clients. They showed dramatic improvements in people’s posture, going from essentially nonathletic to sprinting like an athlete, with scoliotic spines straightened out when surgery was presented as the only option. People are getting out of chronic back and knee pain. People with neuromuscular disorders show dramatic improvements. The crazy part was most of these people had sought out what society has taught us are our only solutions: physical therapy, medicine, chiropractors, surgery, yoga, etc. These people came to do this methodology because these other solutions failed them. They were treatment and symptom-based, not curative. I was hooked and knew I had to make this my approach to my clients and bring this method to St. Augustine. As I became more proficient in optimizing human biomechanics and functional strength, which I consider real “Functional” training (a misguided buzzword used everywhere in the industry), I decided to start my own business and leave the gym I was at. I started myoSYNC three years ago and have been fortunate to help many clients get out of pain, correct their posture, move better, and be re-introduced to their bodies and how to use them correctly in exercise and daily life. All this leads to a better quality of life that will last them much further into their later years than what you currently see in the industry. I measure my effectiveness based on my clients’ visual results I can put in front of someone else’s face. They can see that this method works. There are thousands of Functional Patterns results of all kinds all over Instagram. I don’t attract clients with credentials or degrees, which, unfortunately, many people still use to decide where to seek solutions.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has been a smooth road for the most part, as once a client tries this training method, it makes so much sense to them, and they feel changes in their body so fast. I have been fortunate not to have spent one penny on marketing in the three years since I opened. At times, I will be challenged by clients’ former or current trainers and doctors as to the efficacy of these methods, but the demand for the business tells the story.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what are you most proud of?
The result I am most proud of is a client who had a severe stroke at only 50 years old, lost complete use of his right arm and right leg, and also his speech and language comprehension skills (Global Aphasia). His parents were told he would not have a life worth living, and they almost decided to take him off life support because of that advice. He tried physical therapy, and it didn’t help much. After training together for a year and a half, however, he has regained the use of his right arm, can walk unassisted, and is improving more and more each day. It is incredible to witness.
What changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
The industry is increasingly adopting this methodology but still fighting it simultaneously. Unfortunately, our “influencers” and healthcare system prioritize profit over ethics and efficacy. Over the next 5-10 years, however, the effectiveness of this methodology will be so widely witnessed that it will be difficult to deny it, and people will smarten up and figure out how to approach their training. Biomechanics and posture-based strength training will eventually take over and eventually become the norm.
