Catherine Jones on Life, Lessons & Legacy

Catherine Jones shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Hi Catherine, thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: Have any recent moments made you laugh or feel proud?
No recent moments but I’m most proud of the business my husband and I have built. Its always been a dream and I really thought a dream is all it would ever be and here we are 10yrs living the dream.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Catherine Jones and I’m restaurant owner. My restaurant is Shut Em Down Authentic Southern Restaurant. Most people refer to our restaurant as Soul Food but we rather be referred to as Southern Food. These are everyday food items that most people grew up in the south eating for Sunday dinner. The funny thing is I’m not from the south and had never even tasted most of the food we serve in our restaurant. I moved here back in 1999 with my husband as he is from the south. One day my husband brought me a plate from his aunt house and from that day I fell in love with the food. It was so seasoned and yummy. I started to learn how to cook all of the items we serve in our restaurant currently. I would call his aunt and get tips on how to cook as Sunday dinners were mostly at our house. I loved cooking and baking . All the desserts served in our restaurant are made by me. When we started our restaurant back in 2014 our goal was to serve good food at a reasonable price. Our food is fresh, homemade and seasoned with love. My husband and I have both been in the restaurant business most our lives. Owning a restaurant was something we both have always dreamed about.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who taught you the most about work?
I had a manager, Matt Clark who taught me alot about the restaurant business. Currently working with my husband, he too has taught me alot.

What did suffering teach you that success never could?
To be humble. I feel very successful and blessed in my life but I know I did not get here by myself.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? How do you differentiate between fads and real foundational shifts?
You have to understand is it something addresses the issue as a whole and will make a significant change or is it just something that just generates a sudden burst of popularity and will go away in time.

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. When do you feel most at peace?
I feel most at peace when I am home cooking. I turn the radio on and just get in my zone.
