Ty Scott King shared her story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Ty , really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What’s more important to you—intelligence, energy, or integrity?
Definitely integrity. Intelligence and energy can open doors, but integrity keeps them open. It’s what makes everything else sustainable and meaningful.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Ty Scott King. I’m a spoken word poet, hip hop artist, voiceover talent, author, and sometimes singer. My art reflects life’s highs and lows, faith, and the pursuit of purpose in a way that I hope sparks courage and encouragement for anyone listening. I’ve been blessed to be Grammy®-nominated for my poetry, perform at venues like the United States Pentagon, and work as a voiceover artist for major brands like McDonald’s and Pizza Hut. I’m also a two-time bestselling author. At the heart of everything I do is a desire to create art that inspires, uplifts, and helps people connect with their God-given purpose. Right now, I’m focused on my latest spoken word album “Roots & Wings”—which is currently under consideration for a GRAMMY®—building a faith-centered community for women, and finding new ways to encourage more people to chase their purpose.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
Before I could fully see myself, my family and God saw me clearly. My family encouraged and celebrated my gifts from a young age, holding me steady through doubts and cheering me on in every milestone. At the same time, God gave me the vision and faith to believe in myself before I fully could. Together, their support and His guidance helped me recognize my purpose and step into the work I was meant to do.
What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Suffering taught me resilience, patience, and perspective in a way success never could. It showed me who I really am, what truly matters, and how to keep moving forward even when the path feels uncertain. Those hard moments helped forge my faith, character, and strength. I’ve learned to trust the process, embrace growth, find and refine my voice, and to recognize the light even in the darkest seasons.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
One of the biggest lies the music industry tells is that success is purely about fame or streams. But the truth is, the most meaningful work usually happens by making loyal fans/followers, creating impact, and leaving something that lasts. Another lie is that talent alone is enough, but it’s not. Connections, strategy, and consistency matter just as much as artistry; that what usually make the difference between a project that fades and one that stands the test of time. And finally, the industry likes to pretend that creativity and commerce (money) can’t coexist, when in reality, smart artists can honor their art, share their story authentically, and still build a sustainable career. For me, it’s about staying true to my voice while navigating the business with intention and purpose.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
I’ve been writing poems and songs since I was eight, and I wholeheartedly believe I was put on this earth to encourage people with my words and help them see their God-given purpose. My family always encouraged me, and I’ve always been self-driven, so I didn’t let anyone steer me off course. Even when the path wasn’t clear or others doubted me, I kept showing up for my gifts. Over time, I realized that living out this calling means leaning into the moments that scare me, speaking truth even when it’s hard, and trusting that the words I share can plant hope, spark courage, and remind someone that they are exactly where they’re meant to be.
