An Inspired Chat with Heather Kelly of Midtown, Tallahassee

Heather Kelly shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Hi Heather, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
My 3-year-old daughter brings me joy outside of work. When we get to spend time together, she grounds me in what’s most important.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I have a love for creating art, and the route I get to express this most is through makeup. It started as a creative outlet for me in Fashion Design school. Later, it became a career and now I get to glam brides for their special day. I also believe in continued personal development and growth. Part of looking your best includes caring for your skin and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. My interest in skin has brought me to Physician Assistant school, where I am pursuing dermatology. Makeup artistry has been a big part of my life for the last 17 years and it will continue to be. But starting December 2026, I will be entering full time into a medical specialty, with makeup art inspiring me on the weekends.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
When I was a child I was convinced I’d be a dance choreographer for music videos when I got older, ha! I loved dance and participated in jazz, ballet, hip hop, and tap. But then I grew up and realized how competitive that industry is. Lucky for me, I enjoyed other areas of the arts as well.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
I would tell my younger self that I am whole and enough as I am; to focus on developing a strong career and consider a relationship as secondary. I would tell her to develop a clear vision for what you want your life to look like and work hard towards it. Our culture has shifted in this direction for the better, but when I was growing up, I feel too much importance was placed on finding a partner. I think the majority of that energy should be funneled into a career you are passionate about, so there is a foundation of stability and meaning.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
The beauty industry sells perfection. Every image for makeup products is highly photoshopped. It is normal to see pores, smile lines, and imperfections. The lie is that if you achieve this polished, edited look, only then you are beautiful. The industry needs to normalize skin with texture.

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
It would be a blessing to be seen as someone who continually evolved, despite the circumstances and challenges faced; to be remembered as energetic and inspiring. Starting out as a Personal Trainer and Makeup Artist, then training for a challenging role (PA) in order to help others and my family. People who inspire others to make the change they’re scared to – despite what society or friends tells you – are who I hope to emulate.
