Rising Stars: Meet Jade Higgs of Southside

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jade Higgs .

Hi Jade, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
At the tender age of 11, my mom told me she didn’t have the funds to keep getting my hair done as often as I did (every week, lol). I knew that I had to learn how to do it for myself somewhere along the line! And if I became good at it, I’d be able to do hair for others, but it took a while. I was selfish and didn’t want everyone to have the same styles as me, so I declined to do other people’s hair from 16 to 26! But then, a shift took place. I was working for corporate America and started doing hair for some friends after work or on my off days, and I kept it at that for about a year. Then in august of 2019, I prayed for an increase. It didn’t matter where it would come from; I just knew God would come through. And sure enough, 3 months later, I had an influx of clients and realized my prayers were being answered! So I decided to get serious about hair and specialize in faux locs! And in May 2020, I went full-time! JANUARY 2020 Locsbyj was born!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
In the 2 almost 3 years I’ve been Locsbyj, I’ve realized in my journey that you can’t get to without going through! Yes, I’ve had setbacks thus far; of course, Covid played a big role, not being able to work due to curfews or being uncomfortable to work due to the uncertainties of it! And now, dealing with inflation, the flow of customers hasn’t been the same since people no longer have extra for things outside of necessities.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
My current title is Master Faux Loc artist! Or, simply put, Locsbyj. I’ve recently created my style of faux locs called the “Garden Locs”! That I prayed for! I’m currently in the season of my career that I want to create! And I remember being in the hair store, and God showed me a vision! A week later, boom! I did my hair in the garden locs and went viral on Facebook! And I’d have to say that’s one of my proudest moments thus far! With a 98% client retention rate, I believe being goal driven is what sets me apart! It’s not hard to be the stylist your client needs you to be. I’ve always been a people person, so pure interactions are natural.
