Rising Stars: Meet Eileen Corse of Avondale

Today we’d like to introduce you to Eileen Corse.

Hi Eileen, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I am a visual artist. I began this journey years ago. First, I opened a fine art gallery called Corse Gallery & Atelier. I represented 40 artists from around the country and local. I worked hard to promote local artists, holding shows and openings for many. I operated it for 8 years and thought, maybe I will concentrate on my own art for a while. So, I closed the gallery, moved two doors down and opened my very own art studio where I could create and paint. It’s been a real blessing.
That was nine years ago and my art sales have taken off.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Operating the gallery was a big struggle. I opened in March 2008 and the housing market crashed in October. I barely made ends meet. I was often in the red.
After I moved to my private studio, things began to turn around with the economy.
I then picked up a few gallery representations, and things began to take off from there.
Now, I am so pleased to say that I have collectors from all over the world.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Like I said, I am a visual artist. I paint in oils on canvas with a large 3 inch pallet knife. I have worked diligently to insure that my artwork is unique and recognizable.

I looked for a genre that was near to my heart and one that was special enough that it would be set apart from what most artists focus on.

That’s when I found my “Water” series. It is a series of people in and around the water.

It began as a bit of a rebellion, in that not many artists at that time were interested in painting swimmers. It took a bit of courage to tackle the subject, but tackle it I did!

After my first two paintings were finished and published on social media, I was contacted by my first non-local gallery to represent me. Over the years I have had the fortune to be represented by some of the finest galleries in the country.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
My success has been based on a couple things. I have a very good business sense, and I am so eager to learn new things.
I have shared my business experience with artists in my community. I hosted one-day workshops for other artists on the subject of how to promote yourself.
It is so important in the creative community for one to believe in oneself enough to unabashedly promote one’s own artwork.
It’s not bragging. It is just another hat the artist must wear to be successful.
