Life & Work with Monkesha Hubbard

Today we’d like to introduce you to Monkesha Hubbard.

Hi Monkesha, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My name is Monkesha, and I’m a Jacksonville native who grew up in the Arlington area. I attended Terry Parker High School and then went to college at the University of Florida ” GO GATORS,” where I obtained my bachelor’s in Health Education. I have always had a passion for healthcare and helping others. But in 2021 I decided to make a shift and turn my hobby of photography into a full-blown business. It has been an amazing ride ever since!
I’m the owner and lead photographer at MH Portraits which specializes in Weddings, Boudoir and Lifestyle photography. I serve Jacksonville and surrounding areas but I’m always willing to travel. My love for photography started over 5 years ago when I decided to make a Youtube channel, and I became so fascinated with my camera. So I decided to take photos of my close friends. I would create an entire shoot doing their hair and makeup. I realized then I enjoyed capturing those precious moments that only a camera can tell the story. I’ve always believed that my purpose in life is to be of service to others, and I get to do that in both of my careers of being a health professional and a photographer.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Starting a business always comes with its challenges. Being a business owner if a full-time job but one that you will enjoy when you love what you’re doing. But I had to learn a lot of things from creating workflows that helps me with onboard clients. As a business owner, you are the bookkeeper, social media representative, editor, and the list goes on. So, it has been challenging learning how to streamline all those areas but I have met a great community of fellow photographers who have helped me succeed.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in weddings, boudoir and lifestyle photography. I love to capture authentic and raw emotions in my photos. My style can be described as warm with a mixture of natural moody tones. I really enjoy doing weddings and boudoir photos the most. I love witnessing my couples get married and being able to document that special day. I also enjoy doing boudoir photos because I love to witness women owning their bodies and displaying the beautiful person they are. No matter what I’m going to be my clients’ biggest cheerleader no matter what session they book because I truly enjoy creating and making their vision come true whether that’s marrying the love of your life, having a baby, or needing to slip on some lingerie to feel like a Queen. I got you!

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Stay true to who you are. There are so many people doing the same thing but always strive to be true to yourself. This will always set you apart from everyone else. Also, find a close group of people in your field that can teach you and help you grow whether that’s in business or personally.
