Life & Work with Emily Tillman

Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Tillman.

Hi Emily, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
I grew up in England with a love for Soccer. I played and captained Chelsea Ladies Academy before receiving a full scholarship to play soccer in the United States at Troy University.

During my Sophomore season at Troy, I dislocated both of my knee caps and unfortunately ended my career with that injury at that moment. I was fortunate enough to be offered a coaching position which meant I got to experience coaching at Division 1 level at a very early age.

It was during this time that I got offered to coach a few young players in a one and one private session and fell in love with the technical aspect of developing a players soccer game. Whilst I was gaining experience coaching, I was also aware that I had a lot of support for my injury physically but not mentally and this prompted me to seek out educational routes into Sports Psychology.

After completing my Master’s in Sport Psychology, I realized that there this a large gap in support, guidance, and education for young athletes around the mental side of the game and that is where the idea for Body-Mind Performance was born.

When developing my performance coaching business I soon realized that a lot of athletes, myself included, are often bombarded with misinformation when it comes to strength and conditioning that is specific to their sport so I decided to get my CSCS certification and become a qualified strength and conditioning coach to be able to provide athletes with everything they need to excel on their field.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
The road to creating Body Mind Performance has been a bumpy one with setbacks from the injury to moving back post-graduation to England for 3 years.

It has been difficult at times but trusting the process and having a bigger picture in my mind has helped me to overcome those struggles.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a sports performance coach that specializes in teaching young athletes in Jacksonville how to improve the mental, technical and physical elements of their soccer game.

I am most known for being an encouraging coach that tries to educate individuals by creating a fun, honest, and challenging environment for players to excel. I am most proud of seeing the kids develop through building their confidence, believing in themselves, and dominating on the field.

I think what sets me apart from others is that Body Mind Performance is a female-owned business and I have lived, played, and coached in both the UK and USA which I feel allows me to bring knowledge and experience from multiple areas.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I think the biggest risk I took was deciding to start this business knowing absolutely nobody in Jacksonville, being brand new to the area, and starting a business during a pandemic.

I wouldn’t usually say I am a risk-taker but I do believe you have to trust yourself and your instincts when starting a business and I trusted myself enough to know I could make this work.
