Exploring Life & Business with Rebecca Mullin of Twisted Compass

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rebecca Mullin.

Hi Rebecca, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
After 12-years of living across the street from each other, an idea was born. Izzy, Rosa, Craig, Rebecca, and their children would wake up every Sunday and drink coffee at each other’s houses. Neither one knows when the tradition started but complaints were never made.

Rebecca and Craig’s daughter was always dragging the family to coffee shops in every city they visited. They thought “you know we could do this,” and from there they decided to research, research and research. In the end, they noticed there was no craft coffee house in the Fruit Cove area and that their idea was something they could actually achieve.

The owners decided Bold Bean coffee was the right choice for their shop, Bold Bean really believed in what the owners could bring to the sleepy little suburbs of Fruit Cove. Months later, Twisted Compass Brewing Co. opened its doors to the people of Fruit Cove. From there, more friendships were born out of the owners’ love for coffee, friendships that would turn regulars into friends. Friendships that would turn employees into family members. Friendships that would turn Twisted Compass into a sanctuary where people could play board games, talk with loved ones, and meet with friends.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
We have been very fortunate to be able to continue our vision over the last three and a half years. However, the pandemic forged us into a direction we had not anticipated taking. Prior to 2019 our pastries and sandwiches came from a local bakery.

When they shut down we were forced to start baking our own. With the help of our manager, Rae, and a few recipes from Rebecca’s family cookbook, we were able to create an assortment of very tasty scones, cookies, muffins, egg soufflés, sandwiches, and an assortment of other delicious pastries and croissants.

We change a few items up on a seasonal basis, as well. Right now, our pumpkin muffin is back, which is always a favorite amongst our regulars.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Twisted Compass?
We are a coffee shop. Our coffee is sourced from the local roaster, Bold Bean. We specialize in a more traditional European espresso selection which includes espresso shots, macchiatos, cortados, and lattes. We also serve drip coffee, iced coffee, cold brew, iced lattes, fruit smoothies, frozen lattes, milkshakes, and hot apple cider.

We proudly serve a broad selection of delicious teas from Cultivate Tea and Spice in St. Augustine. Our hot chocolates are also very popular. They are made with Ghirardelli dark chocolate syrup and steamed milk topped with a little heart. Along with our house-made pastries, we also sell local Hyppo popsicles and Fit Fab Cake Pops.

One thing that we believe sets us apart from other coffee shops is that we actually live in our community. We raised our children here. We feel at home in our coffee shop and we strive to make sure each and every one of our customers feel at home here, as well.

Besides our coffee, we are most proud of our community spirit. People have come to our shop and met other people and become good friends. People have shared cups of Twisted Compass coffee over a first date. A newlywed couple shared their first cup of coffee together at Twisted Compass just after they said, “I do”.

We have hosted bible study groups, knitting clubs, wedding showers, baby showers, and local musical talent shows. Each time we host an event or talk with a customer, they become a friend and a part of Twisted Compass and we can’t wait to see them again.
