Today we’d like to introduce you to Emanuel Washington.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
In 1999, I met my future partner at a book store and we talked about the lack of cultural events in Jacksonville and so we started one big event and then started a Soul Release poetry and Soul Release live featuring artists in and around the country to our spot. Then we started marketing and promoting for larger venues. Later on, I started getting into filmmaking and Literacy awareness and now I do both and history projects.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Hell no, getting people to work with you before they get paid and then finding the funding sources first. But that’s beginning to change and now we’re in the room.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
While in all three areas, I produce films that I develop, Literacy programs that I develop, and cultural history that I present, and I also support other artists in their ventures.
Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
I want to make a major impact on my city.
