Daily Inspiration: Meet Dav Reeves

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dav Reeves.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I first got interested in the body art industry when I was very young, I started noticing my stepfather and my mother’s friends having tattoos and piercings. I was probably only 6 or 7 years old but that’s when I started drawing and getting more and more into art.

As I grew older, my family would always buy me art supplies for birthdays and holidays. Finally, in my early 20s, I took an apprenticeship as a body piercer for a couple of years in a small town on the border of Ohio and Indiana.

After that, I went back to my hometown of Springfield, Ohio, and was offered a job in a shop as a body piercer which led to an apprenticeship in tattooing which I never finished because the shop closed.

After that, I worked in a few shops here and there for several years. Until I was asked to partner up to open a new tattoo and piercing shop, things went well for a year then my “partner” started doing piercings which he wasn’t qualified to do when I wasn’t there. Instead of calling me in, they stole my clients both for body piercing and tattoos.

Also, he started making purchases and choices for the shop and wouldn’t involve me in these decisions. Finally, the shop folded because I had enough of the deceitfulness and stealing of my clients. So I moved to Jacksonville, FL and opened my own studio, and have been working towards a better future.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There’s been alot of challenges to where I am today as a tattooer and body piercer. But nothing that isn’t normal for the industry.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a tattoo artist, body piercer, and studio owner. I specialize in neo-traditional and illustration tattoos and also have and do any kind of body piercing asked of me.

Minus dermal or implants they’re just not for me. I’m most proud to have a studio that’s mine and as of right now it’s only a one-man show. What sets me apart from other shops is, that any tattoo I do you won’t find on Pinterest, Instagram, or anywhere else.

I make personal designs for my clientele, I spend the time with them to make a perfect tattoo for their idea.

Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs, or other resources you think our readers should check out?
Pandora is a big part of my process, I’ve gotta have music playing or it doesn’t feel right. That plus pen paper and an Ipad.
