Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittany Zimmerman.
Hi Brittany, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
For as long as I can remember, I’ve been fascinated with beautiful homes. From my custom decorated dollhouse to cutting out furniture from the JCPenney catalog creating “mood boards” (before I ever knew that was part of the process), I knew there was something deep within my soul that loved to create beauty. My mother would always include me in decorating our home, allowing me to practice creating vignettes on bookshelves and eventually redesigning my bedroom and bathroom at age twelve. I really can’t remember a time when I wasn’t immensely drawn to every detail of a beautiful space.
While my formal education was in Event & Sports Management, I loved being able to style spaces for special events.
Over the years, family and friends would often ask for guidance on how to decorate or redo spaces in their homes or pieces of furniture. It wasn’t really until 2019, on a trip to Paris, that I realized interior décor and design were calling my name, so I moved on to pursue educating myself in the art of interiors.
Fast forward to 2020, with the utmost support of my husband, I left my traditional 8 to 5 job and started Bleu Bee Designs; a residential design firm offering Home Styling and Full Design for Renovations and New Builds.
Coming from a family full of entrepreneurs and small business owners, I knew that I wanted my niche to connect with the locally owned businesses within our community. I felt that was the best way I could give back to my city, so I primarily source and work with locally owned companies as well as promote a “collaboration over competition” initiative among creatives in my circle of influence. These efforts have since brought numerous collaborations with local businesses and industry professionals, as well as becoming the Head Designer for The Untamed Square: An Online Female Art Collective, where I consult on art and design placement within clients’ homes.
I’m proud to be an accredited member of AMSE (Association of Military Spouse Entrepreneurs), in which we began offering E-Design (virtual design) services across the U.S. and Canada. Curating a sense of home no matter where the U.S. Navy sends us, is sure to be an exciting adventure in decorating, for our own home as well as others looking for design services that aren’t in our local area.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Leaving a traditional 8 to 5 job definitely, was a leap of faith for myself and our family, paired with the unknowns of a global pandemic, but thankfully we see that God has provided and I’ve been able to connect with a close-knit community of creatives, designers, and business coach, as I continue to educate myself of running a business and working within the interior design industry.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Bleu Bee Designs?
The path to finally creating your dream business is never one that is direct! From the time, I graduated from Florida State University, my career has consistently evolved into more of where I truly want to be. While I always knew that I wanted to run my own design firm, the process of getting to this point has been filled with jobs that (in retrospect) have continually prepared me for where I am today.
With over a decade of experience in logistics, project management, vendor management, and continuing education, I can see how each job uniquely benefitted and developed me into the small business owner and designer I am today. Bleu Bee Designs specializes in offering attainable and approachable design services, with a focus on sourcing from and supporting locally-owned independent businesses throughout the design process.
We take a client-focused approach to design, ensuring the results are not only beautiful but thoughtful and functional to each family we work with. We love to layer in unique pieces such as original art, antiques, or heirlooms, and our signature style isn’t about us, but curating a space within your home that speaks to your soul. Some people look for a beautiful place, while we simply make a place beautiful.
We’re a Navy family and realize that offers us a unique perspective into helping other military families feel at home no matter where they’re currently stationed. By offering E-design, we can also work with clients across the U.S. and Canada as well, keeping us flexible, creative, and able to work remotely.
I am most proud that I have created consistent relationships with local business owners that I source from repeatedly. Whether that is sourcing original art from artists, supporting emerging industry professionals while working in tandem on multiple projects, sourcing florals for photoshoots from an independent start-up florist, or having a fellow military spouse photographer shoot our final projects, I love the human connection with others who are passionately pursuing their dreams.
I truly believe that if we all use our connections to further one another’s dreams, that’s how we get to continue to do what we’re called to do!
Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
The “Bleu” in our name isn’t a typo, but French for the color blue. Inspired by the most gorgeous blue façade of a bakery that stopped me in my tracks while in Paris, the idea for Bleu Bee Designs came to life. “Bee” is a childhood nickname that began from my mom, and has been with me for as long as I can remember.
