Life & Work with Stephanie English of Beaches/Southside

Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephanie English.

Hi Stephanie, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always considered myself a creative person. Growing up, I was constantly drawn to the arts, whether it was writing, music, dance, or photography. Right after graduating high school, I started taking photos of friends and family just for fun. At the time, I didn’t think it would turn into anything serious, but I quickly realized how much I loved it. What started as a passion project became something more when people started reaching out and asking me to take their photos. I began investing time into learning everything I could: watching tutorials, studying other photographers, and practicing constantly. I taught myself editing, how to pose clients, how to use lighting, and how to run a business. Eventually, I started taking on paid shoots, built a brand, and turned my passion into a business!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
When I moved to Jacksonville for college, it brought some challenges. Starting fresh in a new city isn’t easy, but it also opened up a lot of doors. I connected with new people, found new locations and venues, and continued to grow not only as a photographer but as a person. Like many creatives, I dealt with imposter syndrome in the beginning and wondered if I was “good enough” for a city so much larger than what I’m familiar with, or if anyone would really want to hire me or take me seriously as a young professoinal. I was also balancing school, multiple part-time jobs, and trying to grow a business, which took a lot of time and energy. Moving to a new city meant rebuilding a client base and networking all over again. But thankfully, those challenges pushed me out of my comfort zone and helped me grow so much. I’ve learned to trust my instincts, stay true to my style, and not be afraid to show up even when I’m nervous.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a lifestyle and portrait photographer who specializes in family portraits. Family has always been the most important thing to me, so it felt natural to build my business around capturing those connections. Whether it’s the quiet in-between moments, the wild joy of little kids running around, or the way parents look at their children, those are the moments I live for. I want the images to feel real, like a snapshot of what your life actually feels like in that moment. I create a relaxed, fun environment so that families can just be themselves, and I can document the love, chaos, laughter, and connection that makes them them. What I’m most proud of is how often clients tell me they felt seen during their session, like their personalities, their bond, and their love were captured exactly how they feel it. That’s what it’s all about for me!

Who else deserves credit in your story?
I wouldn’t be where I am without the people who believed in me early on. My family and close friends were my first models and biggest cheerleaders. They encouraged me to go for it even when I was still figuring things out. I’ve also been lucky to connect with other photographers and creatives who shared their knowledge and were open to collaboration. Their advice and support were so important to my growth, especially when I was just starting out. And of course, my clients, especially the ones who trusted me with their memories when I was still finding my style. They all played a huge role in getting me to where I am today. I’m endlessly grateful for every person who has let me be a part of their story.
