Life & Work with Petrova Moon of Jacksonville

Today we’d like to introduce you to Petrova Moon.

Hi Petrova , so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I was born and raised in New York City. I moved to Florida in April of 2015, lived in a couple of cities and settled in Jacksonville in late 2023. I’d always had an affinity for art in some way, shape or form. Growing up, I leaned more into cosmetology and spent some time learning and practicing doing hair and makeup. I had the opportunity to work on a couple of model projects and was the go-to in high school and college for hair and makeup. Sketching and painting was also on my radar as more of a hobby until I dedicated more time into it later on.

It wasn’t until 2020 where I began to invest more time into a craft. I was drawn to the art of resin initially, I remember spending an entire weekend watching YouTube videos and learning everything I can about it before buying a kit. Once I did, I fell in love. I practiced for a while before feeling confident enough to open an online shop. That was an exhilarating experience for me, and I was so grateful for the success of it. Eventually, I expanded my craft and began painting again. From there, I had the opportunity to participate various art walks, shows, and galleries. I have always been fascinated with everything space related; the cosmic visuals are something I was drawn to capturing on canvas. I graduated from acrylic painting to oil painting which is such a magical medium to capture the essence of cosmic dust, galaxies, and the nature that exists beyond what we can see.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The easiest part of it all is, creating. It’s easy to feel safe and let the creativity flow when you’re in your own bubble. However, my greatest challenges were coming out of my safe space and presenting myself and my art to the public. The marketing and sales part of art has been an aspect I don’t know I have quite gotten used to. Just because you don’t make any sales, does not equate to bad art. Most times, just a conversation and connecting with other individuals is just as fulfilling as making a sale; that is something I consistently remind myself.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
As much as I consider myself an artist; it is not my full-time job. I do currently work a day job as a Medical Biller. I had dedicated my evenings and weekends to my art. I’d say as much as I am proud of what I create; I also feel proud of the balance I have made between my professional daily career and my passion career of art. I also feel a sense of connection and appreciation when I have participated in any art events and being recognized as the ‘Space girl’. I have the deepest connection to our universe; having this portray outward to the public is a profound feeling. Space art has a smaller community than most other types of art and being able to present something new to my local communities makes me feel set apart from most, while being ecstatic to bring new ideas and inspiration to others.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
What I love about Jacksonville is the various communities that exist within one. This city holds so many different events of all kinds, there exists every kind of opportunity for all walks of different lifestyles and interests. My least favorite thing is on me; I have not gotten the opportunity to experience the many wonderful events as of yet. I am excited to be a part of this city, and I plan to participate in an art event soon.
