Hidden Gems: Meet Kanada Akira of Soilful Sis

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kanada Akira.

Hi Kanada, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My fiancé and I began a landscape company 5 years ago. Before, I used to have a black thumb and constantly waste money year after year buying plants and having no success. A college course about environmental sustainability re-sparked my interest in growing plants again after the class went into deep details about soil health and composition. Something clicked and the experiments in the class lead to me doing my own experiments in the garden and within the landscape business. These experiments expanded quickly as we wanted to explore homesteading and how our company could benefit off of all the new knowledge and experience we were gaining. Our backyard garden grew from a few pots to a totally diy renovated oasis. As an already homeschooling mom I provided the knowledge free of charge to those in my immediate community and happily encouraged all who would listen to start growing food because if I can do it, anyone truly can. Now we officially offer classes, workshops and events encouraging community, sustainability practices and growing what you eat,

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The main struggle for me is being too eager to expand. I’m in such personal awe at my own progress and passionately want everyone else to learn what I finally was able to understand: everyone can grown!

We’ve been impressed with Soilful Sis, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Soilful Sis is more than a gardening brand—it’s a movement rooted in community, sustainability, and self-sufficiency. We specialize in personalized garden and landscape design plans that help people grow food right where they are—whether it’s a backyard, front yard, or even a patio. We’re known for combining practical garden coaching with soulful storytelling and education, making gardening feel personal, powerful, and healing.

What sets us apart is our deep commitment to the why behind growing. We don’t just help people grow plants—we help them reconnect with the land, rediscover their roots, and reclaim their food freedom. We’re passionate about designing spaces that are not only productive, but also beautiful and purposeful—spaces that attract pollinators, spark joy, and serve entire households.

I’m most proud of how our brand has become a trusted source of inspiration and guidance for first-time gardeners, women, and families looking to live more intentionally. From our custom grow plans and installations to our workshops and tea experiences, we offer approachable tools and services that empower people to grow with confidence and purpose.

If you’ve ever dreamed of starting a garden but didn’t know where to start, Soilful Sis is your guide. We offer consultations, customized grow plans, pollinator-friendly landscaping, and educational events designed to help you thrive. We believe in growing slow, growing smart, and growing together.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
The heart of Soilful Sis has always been about service. From sharing gardening knowledge freely in my community to creating personalized plans that make growing feel possible for beginners, every step of this journey has been rooted in helping others reconnect with the earth and themselves.

Success has come not just from what I know, but from how I’ve used that knowledge to uplift, educate, and inspire others to grow their own food, create beauty, and find peace in their gardens. When your purpose is to serve, everything else blossoms.
