Inspiring Conversations with Courtney Bentley of Bold City K9

Today we’d like to introduce you to Courtney Bentley.

Hi Courtney, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My interest in training began when I was working in a veterinary hospital in 2012. I was originally pursuing a career as a veterinary technician, but was led to training by my new, unruly puppy- Rusko, a cattledog mix and the “why” behind the work that I do! I enrolled in a few big box pet store classes, none of which helped me reach my goals or address my dog’s growing behavioral issues (intense reactivity, aggression towards strange dogs, running away, you name it), and in researching additional training, I came across several trade schools for dog trainers. Within 3 weeks, I was moving to Texas to begin my first formal program, and have never looked back!

Since, I’ve completed several certificate programs all around the country, from pet dogs to working dogs. For the last 11 years, I’ve been running a successful and very busy pet dog training business here in Jacksonville, worked as a Professional Explosives Detection Dog Handler screening airline cargo at 2 major US airports (ATL and SFO), as well as a handling a Narcotics Detection Dog screening passengers for Carnival Cruiselines at JaxPort! We also breed, raise, and train single and dual purpose working dogs; these are typically Malinois, Germand Shepherds, and/or Dutch Shepherds.

I’ve spent my career trying to learn as much as possible to piece together the thorough programs that we offer now, to provide our clients and their dogs with the very best results- because we want them to have the best life possible! I still have a few formal education programs I’d love to attend, but am currently focused on growing our team!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I struggled with some typical things along the way; learning all about websites/marketing/sales (you wear many hats as a business owner), purchasing property to continue to build my business, etc. I started this business from nothing at 22 years old, but everything has worked out in its own time! We now have a great 10 acre property that the dogs and our family love, and are blessed with many new dedicated clients every year! Grateful for those that have supported and encouraged me.

As you know, we’re big fans of Bold City K9. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
We specialize in thorough, done-for-you dog training programs that set our clients and their dogs up for the best long term success. Many owners struggle with having the time or the skill to train their own dog, so we make it easy. From happy go lucky puppies to serious cases and challenging breeds, we offer the perfect solution for any dog and owner! Programs include; boarding and training time for the dog to learn a solid foundation with a professional, and lifetime private lessons for the owner to get as much training and reinforcement as they need to reach their goals! We offer some of the best credentials and professional experience in the industry and are still regularly continuing our education to ensure that we offer the most cultivated and effective methods available. Our programs offer an intimate experience for owners and their dogs, and we genuinely want to help them live the best life together! How do you think about happiness?
My kids. I have a 4 year old and a 1 year old, and I love making their childhood the best it can possibly be. My husband and I want them to feel our efforts as their parents and know that we genuinely support their dreams and aspirations.

My dogs. I love the companionship and fulfilling their needs. They completely changed the trajectory of my life, and it was the best decision I ever made.

Nature. Camping, hiking, anything outdoors just feels right!
