Hi J, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
In my journey through entertainment, I’ve always been drawn to the stage. My passion for theater began in high school and carried into college; however, I wanted to explore stand-up comedy. When I decided to leave my theater studies behind, I felt a void without the thrill of performing. It was during this time that I met someone in the stand-up scene who was able to connect me to the venues and shows.
My first time doing stand-up was at an open mic night in 2012 at Brewsters Pit, a venue that had transformed from an old gas station into a black box theater for punk rock and grunge events. On Monday nights, it was an open mic for comedians. After spending nearly a year honing my craft at various open mics, I took a workshop class at the Comedy Zone, which significantly shaped my comedic journey.
Today, I am a house emcee at the Comedy Zone in Jacksonville, Florida. I’ve had the privilege of traveling extensively for performances, and I’ve produced numerous shows throughout Jacksonville, including a memorable event at the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp stadium during the pandemic. My dedication to comedy has earned me recognition as a finalist for Florida’s Funniest Female and for Florida’s Funniest Comedian on two occasions.
I’ve had the honor of sharing the stage with talented comedians such as Chris Cope, AJ Wilkerson, John Henton, B. Simone, Sarah Hester Ross, and Danae Hays. Currently, I curate a monthly showcase called the Knock Knock Comedy Showcase at The Emerald Vine Room, featuring a rotating lineup of comedians from across the region.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The journey to success as a female comedian is anything but smooth. Navigating the world of comedy presents unique challenges, particularly when it comes to securing bookings and finding the energy to advocate for yourself. As a local comedian striving to build a platform and grow a following, the obstacles can feel overwhelming. Balancing of social media algorithms, developing new material, and managing booking logistics—while simultaneously juggling a full-time job outside of comedy—can be exhausting.
Throughout my 13-year journey, there have been moments when I’ve seriously considered putting down the mic. Yet, just when I think I might be ready to step away, something pulls me back in, reminding me that my joke isn’t finished yet.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I specialize in storytelling through my comedy, drawing inspiration from my own experiences and the observations I make about the world around me. My slogan, “Duval Famous,” resonates deeply with both my stand-up and my support for our Jacksonville Jaguars. I’m proud to have cultivated a following in town and to represent our community through various avenues, shining a spotlight on our city.
My signature vibrant red hair has become a staple of my persona, and I embrace being recognized not just for my performances, but also for my passion for our beloved Jacksonville. It’s a joy to connect with others and celebrate the unique spirit of our city through my comedy.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
There’s an indescribable joy in walking away from a performance knowing that both I and the audience have shared genuine laughter and created memorable moments together. When audience members approach me afterward, eager to take photos and share how my set brightened their day, its a feeling that can’t be matched or explained.
I cherish the opportunity to connect with folks after a show, hearing their stories and discovering how my experiences resonate with theirs. And when I’m out in the world and someone recognizes me, complimenting my humor, it’s a surreal and uplifting experience. Knowing that people are following my journey in comedy and finding joy in it is incredibly fulfilling.
