Hi Diana, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started my business back in 2013 as a decorator for children’s birthday parties. My goal was to bring joy to children, inspired by the tragic loss of my late husband, SFC Christopher Burks. He was killed in a car accident while on duty in South Korea in August 2012, after 23 years of service. His death was a devastating blow to our family, including our eight children, his mother, and other family members. I believed that by brightening another child’s day, I could help alleviate some of the pain we were experiencing.
In 2022, I decided to revamp the business and expand our services into different industries, including event decorating, lawn services, facility maintenance, and small business support, just to name a few. Throughout my life, I have dedicated myself to helping others, driven by the tragedies I have faced. I believe my calling is to inspire others.
In memory of my husband, I created the Christopher Burks Scholarship Foundation Incorporated (501(c)3 Non-Profit. Christopher was always giving back to others with his time and money, and I wanted to continue his legacy. Our foundation provides a variety of services, including workshops on financial wellness, empowerment conferences, homework assistance, and scholarships.
My journey has been one of resilience and dedication to making a positive impact on the lives of others. Through my business and the foundation, I strive to honor my husband’s memory and inspire others to overcome their challenges and give back to their communities.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Starting and running my business has been an incredible journey, but it hasn’t always been a smooth road. Like many entrepreneurs, I’ve faced my fair share of challenges along the way. One of the biggest struggles was navigating the complexities of starting a business from scratch. From securing initial funding to building a customer base, there were many hurdles to overcome.
On a personal level, balancing my business responsibilities with my family life was challenging. There were times when the demands of the business took a toll on my personal life and finding that balance was a constant struggle.
Despite these struggles, each challenge has taught me valuable lessons and made me a stronger, more resilient entrepreneur. I’m proud of what I’ve accomplished and grateful for the support of my family, friends, and community along the way.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
**What I like best about our city:**
St. Augustine, with its rich history and charming atmosphere, is truly a gem. The city is renowned for its **historic landmarks**, such as the **Castillo de San Marcos National Monument**², which offers a glimpse into the past. The **beautiful white sand beaches**¹ provide a perfect escape for relaxation and recreation. Additionally, the vibrant cultural scene, including museums like **The Pirate Museum**³, adds to the city’s unique charm. The blend of historic architecture and modern amenities makes St. Augustine a delightful place to live and visit.
**What I like least about our city:**
While St. Augustine has many wonderful attributes, one challenge is the **traffic congestion**, especially during peak tourist seasons. The influx of visitors can sometimes make it difficult to navigate the city and find parking. Additionally, the cost of living can be relatively high compared to other areas in Northeast Florida, which is a concern for some residents. Especially underserved family that have low income.
