Inspiring Conversations with Emily Horness of Subtle Skinsations

Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Horness

Hi Emily, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I was born and raised in Wisconsin and traveled to Florida as a little girl and loved it here! I always enjoyed all things beauty and self care related like doing fun face masks and forcing my little brother to let me try to put eyelashes on him. As I grew up, I not only started learning more about skincare and esthetics but had the opportunity to put it into practice on friends and family. This grew and continued through high school where my skills became useful for team sports like dance where we all needed matching makeup, or right before Prom when everyone needed their eyebrows done. So I really grew to love esthetics because it gave me a chance to spend time with people I already loved and it gave me the opportunity to meet people that I grew to love! A few years after high school I traveled down to Florida and decided I needed to plant roots here. I moved what I could pack into my car and made Jacksonville, Florida my new home. The doors seemed to open themselves once the move happened and before I knew it I graduated as a licensed Esthetician and was led to another open door. I worked for an independent woman owned business where I was able to learn not only more about my strengths in the esthetic world but also the vast side of running a business. Months later I was given the opportunity to take over the space and establish my own business; Subtle Skinsations was brought to light. Everyday I get the opportunity to meet new beautiful faces and welcome back familiar ones as well! I specialize in natural lash and brow beauty along with deeper healing than just the skin. Use of aromatherapy, breathwork, and healing frequencies are a few of my favorite ways to have a deeper lasting affect mentally beyond what I can do for the skin. Sound baths use therapeutic sounds and vibrations that slow your brainwaves from a state of waking consciousness to a relaxed consciousness. In deeper sessions even to meditative and sleep like states. My goal is for anyone who comes into my space to leave better than they came physically, emotionally and spiritually. To each person this looks unique and different, and that is the beauty of it!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Leaving everyone and everything I knew back home to move over 1,000 miles away has been one of the hardest things ive done. Having to miss birthdays, holidays, get togethers, and goodbyes is a challenge. And moving to a city where I hardly knew anyone made it another challenge when initially starting business. I wasnt able to rely knowing people to find clients, so I was forced to be creative and to also become more comfortable with making new connections and friends!

As you know, we’re big fans of Subtle Skinsations. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
I specialize in natural brow and lash beauty along with skincare. What sets me apart from others is that I’m looking to not only be a service provider but to step into different roles. Sometimes im a therapist, sometimes we sit together in silence and reflect, on other occasions I step into the role of a healer and we set an intention and clear the negative energy before you leave my space and sometimes we laugh until our stomachs hurt. Coming into my space I want each individual to know im grateful to them and in return I can offer my many different roles to fit what they may need. Its not transactional like going to a chain corporation, I’m building a business based on genuine connections and friendships. I offer a variety of services including full body waxing for both men and women, along with customized facials, back facials, and even bum facials.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Any idea can become reality with a plan, a timeline with your steps to that plan, and the drive to continue executing your plan! Many people while I was getting my license insisted that the best thing to do out of school was to find a big corporation to work under before going solo, but that just was not my vision and what I saw for myself. I highly suggest to anyone that experiences the same thing to remember that one pair of glasses does not work for two different people with two different visions.
