Conversations with Farrah Milan

Today we’d like to introduce you to Farrah Milan

Hi Farrah, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hi! My name is Farrah Milan and I’m an artist & illustrator. I’ve been drawing since I could even acknowledge my own existence. My parents knew I had a gift early in my childhood when it came to drawing. Eventually I grew to be an artsy/crafty kid. I remember in elementary school one year I created a small business folder for creating small sketches and keychain designs that I would create from craft-lace lanyard string. In the folder would be what design you would want, colors, prices and the name of the customer. I guess you can say I always had an entrepreneurial spirit. My father takes credit for the drawing aspect. He would draw sketches as a kid now he has a degree in architectural drafting. But when it comes to painting, I taught myself as a teenager and eventually created a business from it. As time went on, I started venturing into different aspects of art. From creating logos to becoming a book illustrator at the age of 17. Thanks to an amazing woman named Shevonica Howell. She introduced me to my career as an illustrator. I’m beyond blessed to have the most amazing and supportive parents. They motivated me so much, they’re the reason why I’m doing what I love to do today.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It’s been a pretty smooth road for the most part. As an introverted person, it was a struggle to put myself and my work out into the world at the beginning. Over time I developed more and more confidence in my work and myself as an artist.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a visual artist and book illustrator. I specialize in painting portraits specifically. But there truly isn’t anything I can’t paint. I started drawing/painting cars and landscapes in the beginning. As a kid all the way into my adult years, I’ve been known as ‘the artist’. But more on a professional level now. I’m so proud to expand my art on such a large scale over the past few years. I have art published in books and custom portrait paintings in people’s homes all over America, that’ll last forever. I currently have 5 paintings displayed in a restaurant and lounge in Jacksonville FL called Legacy. Also, after 2023 I started shipping paintings worldwide. I believe what sets me apart from others is my deep passion and dedication for art. There isn’t a lot of people that can do what I do.

We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
Something surprising to know is that my art was in a traveling art exhibit that started at the Cummer Museum and went all the way to Ghana when I was 10 years old. Another surprising fact would be, my work stems from music, especially my early work. At the beginning, I painted and sketched music artists mainly. Most of time, I listen to albums of many different music genres from classical to jazz to rap and music documentaries as I paint. But I was born into a family that loves music deeply. My grandfather was the second black man to become general manager of a radio station in the country. I also have an aunt that had a thriving career as a well known radio announcer in Jacksonville FL for many years. I can’t forget about my cousin who is a well known DJ (DJ NickFresh). He does residencies at a few popular clubs in Jacksonville FL and he’s known nationally as well. He was my first customer ever. He bought a small abstract painting from me when I was 8 or 9 years old.
