Daily Inspiration: Meet Ibec Francis

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ibec Francis

Hi Ibec, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’m originally from Queens, New York City, where I began exploring my creative side at a young age. From drawing, writing, and filming small videos on my LG phone, I was always engaged in some form of creation. This passion grew, and during my junior year of high school, with the encouragement of my parents, Clover and Franklin Francis, I self-published my first novel, “Secrets of Hollow.” That was a pivotal moment for me, as it turned my ideas into something tangible for others to read.

I went on to attend the University at Buffalo, where I launched a small photography business, @_.i.capture_ on Instagram. My work focuses on creating compelling narratives through photography, whether it’s nature, portrait, or landscape. My slogan, “Capture the Moments,” reflects my belief in the irreplaceable nature of each moment.

After moving down to Jacksonville and transferring to Valdosta State University for my junior and senior year, my creativity flourished further. I directed and screenwrote three short films—”AWAKE,” “Lockdown,” and “Expressions: Stories from Black Creatives”—which allowed me to collaborate with other creatives and explore new opportunities in the southern regions. I also have more film projects in progress, available on my YouTube channel, @IbecF.

Throughout this journey, I’ve relied on my faith in God and perseverance, guided by Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.” It’s this strength and resilience that have driven me forward, and I’m grateful for the support and opportunities that have come my way. I also want to thank my parents and those who I’m proud to call my close friends for continuing to believe in me and supporting me each step of the way, your support truly means everything.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It hasn’t been a smooth journey, for sure. I’ve faced numerous challenges along the way. For example, there were times when actors/actresses in my short films had to drop out for various reasons or never communicate at all, and scheduling conflicts sometimes led to complete shutdowns of projects. I also encountered difficulties with communication issues from photography clients. These setbacks could be quite draining, but despite these obstacles, I persevered. Each challenge taught me valuable lessons and only strengthened my resolve to keep moving forward.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a photographer, filmmaker, writer, and director originally from New York City, now based in Jacksonville, FL. My work spans several areas: in photography, I focus on nature, portrait, landscape, and event photography. As a writer, I craft screenplays, novels, and short stories. In filmmaking, I direct and produce short films primarily in the drama, sentimental, and thriller genres, and I’m eager to explore new genres in the future.

I’m particularly proud of my work on five short films, where I collaborated with fellow creatives to build compelling narratives. Additionally, I take great pride in the diverse range of stories and images I’ve curated through my photography business.

What sets me apart is my creative thinking and my ability to uncover the deeper meaning behind each creation and showcase that through imagery.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
When it comes to networking, my advice is to connect with people who share your expertise and interests. Seek out groups and communities where creative individuals gather. This approach not only helps you forge valuable friendships but can also lead to potential clients and collaborative opportunities.

In college, I joined the photography club and various creative groups. Through these connections, I was able to arrange photoshoots with models and artists, and recruit actors and actresses for my short films. It was an incredibly rewarding experience that expanded my network and enriched my creative projects.
