Hidden Gems: Meet Philip Maple of Barley and Pie Brewing Co

Today we’d like to introduce you to Philip Maple

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I have been involved in the brewery/restaurant business in north Florida since 2016. My life long passion has been pizza specially pizza dough. I started working with sourdough around 2017 and had a goal one day to open a sourdough pizzeria and brewery in Fleming Island FL where my family and I live. Summer of 2022 we found our location and worked over a year and a half on the plans and renovation. We opened Barley and Pie Brewing Co on June 1st 2024. We have grown to not just offering sourdough pizza, but we also bake our own sourdough bread in house daily, brew our own beer, and have a full liquor bar. Our family dog Barley a 160 lb bull mastiff couch potato is the primary logo/mascot. My Wife and I make all of our pizza dough, as well as make and bake our breads. Both of our children also pitch in from time to time.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It was an extremely hard process to retro fit our leased space for a brewery and restaurant. The old restaurant that vacated the space basically left it on par with a dumpster fire. As such we were very over budget on the build out. This has put a strain on our operating capital, but we are making strides and getting stronger each month. Thankfully we found an amazing staff that has been the lifeline for the business, everyday they give their all.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
We are the only Sourdough Pizzeria in North Florida. We are the only sourdough bakery in Fleming Island. We are the only Craft brewery in Fleming Island. As a restaurant, everything we serve to our customers we make in house, we take great pride in that and it sets us apart from 99% of restaurants in Fleming Island. We love Clay County and Fleming Island. This is where we live and raise our kids. Our goal from conception was and still is to enrich the lives of Clay County residents via Barley and Pie

What does success mean to you?
Being open for business long term, being in the black, paying all our bills, having money in savings, being able to reward key employees, and one day… just maybe being able to take a paycheck myself.
