Today we’d like to introduce you to Russ Bratcher.
Hi Russ, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, let’s briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
Well, my journey started with a love for the arts amidst the picturesque backdrop of the Lowcountry in Georgetown, SC. Then, I left the small town where I grew up, joined the United States Air Force, and served as an aircraft metals technologist — welder and machinist. After service, I ventured into teaching visual and media arts along the captivating South Carolina coastline for nearly a decade. And now, here I am in Jacksonville, Florida, the proud owner of Russ Bratcher Photography, capturing life’s beautiful moments one click at a time. Yes, I went from fixing planes to framing moments!
Would it have been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Smooth road? Ha! It’s been more like a rollercoaster ride through a foggy swamp! Transitioning from military discipline to classroom chaos had its challenges. Then, diving headfirst into the cutthroat world of professional photography? I’ve had my fair share of “learning moments.” Each hurdle taught me something new, like how to pivot gracefully or embrace an excellent old-fashioned challenge. It keeps life interesting, right? One tip I will give photographers is to partner with as many companies as possible to build your audience and promote community. You can go faster alone but farther together.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My dear readers, my photography is about capturing life’s magic in its purest form. Whether it’s a whimsical family portrait or a pet portrait photo contest, I strive to find the beauty in every moment. I specialize in portrait photography, working with diverse clients, from families and schools to high school seniors and business professionals. Each session is a unique opportunity to create a lasting memory, and I approach it with the same passion and dedication that has defined my journey.
What sets me apart? Besides my killer dance moves at weddings, it’s my blend of military precision and educator empathy. I’m like the Swiss Army knife of photography! But what makes my heart sing? Seeing my clients beam with joy as they gaze upon their framed memories. That’s the good stuff, you all.
What changes do you expect to see in your work and the industry over the next five to ten years?
The world of photography? It’s a rollercoaster, my friends! Mirrorless cameras are the new cool kids on the block and mobile photography? Let’s say the smartphone is playing some serious games. But amidst all this tech talk, storytelling is taking center stage. Authenticity is the name of the game, folks! And sustainability? It’s not just a buzzword — it’s a lifestyle. So hold tight because ‘this is the wildest ride in the wilderness!’ (You know what I mean for all my Disney family out there.) My new mantra is ‘Photographers in the wild.’ Every session is an adventure.
Let’s get down to the talking shop. In the next 5–10 years, I hope to see a shift back to traditional boutique photography — think back to the 1980s when your mom printed your Christmas photos by the photographer. Online galleries are equivalent to a drive-thru restaurant. Creating art and heirloom pieces should be a white-glove experience, and I have a lot to say about that business model, but I will leave it up to the artist to decide. I know a touch-and-go photographer is not serving families, and the last line you want to hear from clients is, “I’m getting your beautiful photos printed at a low-quality drug store.” Clients’ photos end up in an online gallery, on an iPhone, in a cloud, or printed by a stranger at a corner drugstore. This is the saddest story I’ve ever heard, and I do not like it at all.
We’re witnessing a significant shift in the industry towards the boutique business model. Photographers are returning to boutique-style business models, offering a high-touch experience. Some, like my company, even go as far as delivering their art and offering installation. These clients deeply value their families and want to preserve their memories. Regardless of their background, their love for each other or their pets is not underestimated. The value of the artwork and family sets them apart from those who want an online gallery.
