Today we’d like to introduce you to Carolyn Jenkins-Meekins.
Hi Carolyn, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I am originally from Philadelphia, and my husband and I moved to Jacksonville in 2018. While driving around the city, I noticed public transportation was scarce, and I began to wonder how the senior community got from point A to point B. (Philly has a massive transportation system.) So, I began to do my homework and found a definite need for the ambulatory senior community members. So, I stepped out on faith and started Meekins Senior Shuttle. I have found that so many unique programs and services are created daily for a wide demographic our senior citizens often need to be included in the mix. Many don’t drive anymore, they have concerns about using public transportation, relatives or friends may be distant, or they may not want to be a burden on anyone. They still love their independence! I’m here to make that happen.
Would it have been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Has this been a smooth road? Ha! It has been one of the bumpiest roads I have ever had to travel! Jacksonville has an extensive community transport system in place for seniors. They are established, and many are respected well. So, getting into those areas where seniors may need me the most has been a challenge. So, I attend every workshop, networking event, and class that enhances my skill set. A small business like mine is not a deterrent but a fresh idea for a long-existing problem.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I have worked in corporate for many years, but I have always had an entrepreneurial mindset and, therefore, always had that “side job.” I became a full-time entrepreneur about 15 years ago as a caterer. I have no formal culinary training, but the gift of cooking is in my blood and hands, and it has proven to be a delight to hundreds of palettes! Then there is my singing career. I love all genres of music, but I have been blessed to have my talents primarily featured in the Gospel industry. I have been allowed to sing around the world as an ensemble member with the legendary Johnny Thompson Singers of Philadelphia; I have also been a guest host and soloist of TBN Honolulu and was an honored soloist at the home of Wally Amos of Famous Amos Cookies, in Hawaii, and was a semi-finalist in the 2005 Exalting Him Talent Search. I have had several personal concerts and appearances at colleges, convention centers, and dinner theaters. I have also excelled in several multi-level marketing businesses, have earned cars and trips, and led terrific teams. I am most proud of my muti-talents and diversity, and I embrace all of them! What sets me apart from others is my drive. As a senior myself, I am still operating multiple businesses. You are never too old! I truly am just getting better!
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
If there is one thing I’ve learned in this journey, no man is an island! You absolutely cannot do this alone. I must thank those business associates and friends who have poured into me. There have been several days/weeks/months where I thought I had made a huge mistake and should have walked away from this transportation business. But these champions who were sent to be in my life showed me how to do this, don’t say that, sharing their own stories of loss and survival. And, with family’s love, support, and prayers, I wonder if we would even be having this conversation. My husband, daughter, grandsons (Grandkings) are the most loud when cheering me on. It’s not always about money, but knowing people want you to win gives you the strength to keep moving forward, lifesavers.
