Lakeisha Lewis

Hi Lakeisha, can you introduce yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
Hello, I’m Keisha, the founder of HBKK, which stands for Hair by Keisha Kiss. My journey began in Virginia, where I cultivated my lifelong passion for braiding into a professional endeavor. Following four years of service in the Navy, I pursued formal training at Empire Beauty Schools, obtaining my cosmetology license. Transitioning to Jacksonville, I concurrently pursued a degree in criminal justice at Keiser University while furthering my expertise as a stylist. Balancing a full-time job with a part-time stylist position at a beauty shop in Orange Park allowed me to specialize in braid styles. Recognizing the high demand for braids in the warmer climate, I strategically focused my expertise on this area. I swiftly gained recognition for my work ethic and dedication. After a year, I became my boss, transitioning to my first private suite. This allowed me to create a safe and welcoming space for my clients, and HBKK quickly gained traction, with appointments filling up rapidly. Although I graduated with an associate’s degree in criminal justice, my passion for HBKK has become my primary focus. Establishing HBKK as a solo practitioner, I have proudly served my clientele for six years, prioritizing professionalism and excellence in every interaction, for which I am truly blessed.

It wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Navigating the beauty industry has been far from smooth sailing; it demands unwavering dedication, long hours, and a commitment to prioritizing clients above personal matters. Balancing work and personal life initially posed challenges, yet with time, I’ve found a rhythm that suits me. The ever-evolving nature of the industry means staying abreast of new styles and trends, which can be demanding but ultimately rewarding. Additionally, managing diverse personalities entering my workspace requires a delicate balance of comfort and understanding, acknowledging that we are all human and subject to life’s ups and downs. While the journey may present its challenges, the fulfillment derived from serving my clients makes every moment worthwhile.

As you know, we’re big fans of your work. What can you tell our readers who might not be as familiar with it?
As a specialist in braid services and protective styles, particularly renowned for my expertise in Knotless braids and stitch braiding, I take great pride in my six-year tenure as an independent business owner. My commitment to excellence is exemplified by my continuous investment in self-improvement through advanced training and technique refinement. Setting myself apart from others in the industry, I attribute my success to my skill set and my unwavering dedication to superior customer service. Central to my approach is creating a welcoming and comfortable environment for each client, whether new or returning. I prioritize ensuring a seamless and satisfying experience, from consultation to completion, striving to exceed expectations and leaving clients delighted with their final look. Witnessing the joy and satisfaction reflected in their smiles is the ultimate validation of my dedication to delivering exceptional service.

What would you say has been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
One of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned is the significance of staying true to one’s path. I take pride in remaining steadfast in my pursuits, which has yielded significant dividends. External influences and the actions of others have not swayed my trajectory or vision for the future. This unwavering commitment to my course has been instrumental in my achievements thus far, and I remain resolute in adhering to it as I navigate forward.
