Today we’d like to introduce you to Tamieyah Johnson.
Hi Tamieyah, I am so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, how can you bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I am a singer, songwriter, and performer born and raised in Dallas, Texas. From a very young age, my family emphasized the power of music. I come from a musical family on my mother’s and father’s sides. Singing and playing music is a family pastime, an actual bonding experience. I began singing around age 5, with my parents at home and then eventually at church. I started writing music at 7 when my grandmother bought me an acoustic guitar. We also had a keyboard in the house, and I would write songs and perform them for my family. I was even getting my siblings involved. I would have them audition to sing with me. They would tell you I took it way too seriously. In 2010, my family packed up and moved to Miami, Florida. I loathed my parents for driving me from my grandparents, cousins, uncles, aunts, and even friends. I didn’t know this would be the move that grew my love for music, songwriting, and singing. Throughout elementary and middle school, I was in music ensembles like choir, where I sang solos and even directed a band where I played the vibraphone.
I wrote music at home and sang for school events in high school. By my senior year, I decided to go to college to study music. I attended Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University in 2017 for the music industry. It was here that I refined my gifts and began to record professionally. I joined the Theta Nu Chapter of Sigma Alpha Iota International Music Fraternity in 2018, where I would sing in shows and even put together musical events. I was also a member of the FAMU Concert Choir, serving as the Alto section leader and Vice President. I was also cast in the FAMU Connection, a recruitment-based touring group, where I sang, danced, and acted on tour with the university president.
I released my first single in 2018 with a friend from school, and from there, my hunger for artistry grew exponentially. I would go on to co-own a music production company called 7233 Roots, where I’d professionally write and produce music for my classmates and the surrounding Tallahassee area. In 2021, I released my debut album, “Mie,” which charted on Amazon and iTunes RnB charts within the first couple of days. I felt so accomplished as an independent artist. I now attend Berklee School of Music in Manhattan, NYC, where I am completing the master’s of songwriting and production program. I will be graduating in June of 2024. I will release a new music project soon showing my musical and personal growth. Music is my life and one of the most significant parts of my heart. I truly thank God for the gift and the ability to inspire, challenge, and change through music.
It wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Nothing, and I mean nothing in life, is a smooth road. However, my journey has been immensely blessed. The only challenge is chasing a dream in the most competitive industry in the world. Some challenges are trying to keep my eyes focused on my journey. I have been professionally writing music for 7 years, although it has been a long-time passion. The timetable is different for everyone. And my biggest challenge is being okay with mine. But my hard work will pay off in my lifetime.
I appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a singer, songwriter, and performer. I am known for high-energy performances that inspire and encourage. I am most proud of my debut album, “Mie,” which matures as time progresses. It’s a great musical experience for the soul. Everyone is unique in their way; I am the perfect combination of all the places I’m from and carry a light that doesn’t dim.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
First off, GOD! My Lord and Savior Jesus Christ! I am so divinely blessed, protected, and cared for. Next, my parents gave me life and supported my creative passions and dreams. My siblings for being a part of my musical shenanigans. My entire family, the artist, the Johnsons, and my best friends, for believing in me and always affirming me. Shout out to you all. My middle school music teachers are Mrs. Dedesma and Mr. Rogers, and my high school music teacher is Mr. Davis. My college professor, Dr. Mark Butler, turned in my family for pushing me beyond what I thought I could. Chretien Adams, for producing my debut album. My church family for allowing me to grow as a musician. Gia Wyre, thank you for mentoring me and giving me some of my first professional opportunities. There are so many people to name, and I thank them all because, most beautifully, they have shaped who I am and the person I have become.
