Today we’d like to introduce you to Daijah Guns.
Hi Daijah, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started my business, Daispalette by DSG, in the fall of 2019 as a makeup artist. My love for makeup started in my senior year of high school, doing my teammates’ make up for our dance performances. Upon receiving my diploma, I attended Savannah State University, affectionately known as SSU, where I majored in business management, receiving tips inside and outside of the classroom on how to run a successful business. After the world basically shut down in the spring of 2020, doing makeup was not an option for me at that time, so I had to improvise. This is where Daispalette LLC was born. In June of 2020 I started the product side of my business, selling cruelty free handmade lipglosses, body scrubs, body butters, lip liners, eye shadow palettes, and more. A love for all things related to makeup formed and I was very satisfied. Throughout college I offered makeup services to those on and off campus, but never offered hair services, although I always did my own hair and changed my style every week. Upon graduating, I knew I wanted to do more with my business. After receiving my BBA in Management, I moved back to Jacksonville, Fl where I attended a 1300 hour cosmetology course at Paul Mitchell the School, later receiving my cosmetology license in the state of Florida. I now provide hair and makeup services at Amillion Strands Salon and Boutique in Downtown Jacksonville and sell my makeup products via my website. I like to say I am very blessed to be able to do what I love and make people smile daily.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not been a smooth road but I still have no complaints about my journey thus far. Thankfully my support system did not allow me to face many financial struggles when it came to financing my business such as getting supplies and tools (special shout out to my parents), but I did face internal struggles such as fear of not being successful, stresses of balancing schooling with running a business, disappointments of opportunities falling through, common internal struggles of an entrepreneur, but I’m appreciative of every struggle i have and will face on this journey because it’s what makes the journey worth it and even more valuable at the end.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Daispalette is pronounced (DAYZ-PAL-ET). My nickname is Dai and this is my Palette. Initially this name came about because I was only doing makeup at the time, but when I expanded to selling products and offering services, I did not change the name because the term “palette” does not only refer to a “makeup palette.” I now think of it as my artist palette where I continuously add new products and services for the benefit of others. To dig a little deeper into what I offer as a stylist/service and product provider, at the moment I specialize in women’s haircuts, hair color, extensions such as quick weaves & sew-in weaves, wig construction/customizations/installations, and makeup. My favorite services to provide are hair color, wig services, haircuts, and makeup. At Daispalette, you can prepare to have your “beauty that already exists to be enhanced and maximized.” I strive to remind my clients that they are already beautiful prior to the services they are getting, we are only enhancing and maximizing their beauty. I’m currently known for my consultations. Before I start every service, I ask my clients a series of questions to ensure we are both clear and comfortable with their desired outcome, and they appreciate that thoroughly. I also provide complimentary snacks, water, soda, and wine for the comfort of my clients; and shampooing and conditioning are included in every service, which unfortunately isn’t common nowadays. Brand wise I am most proud of the growth and expansion. Starting out with simple lipglosses to providing 25+ services and selling 15+ products via my website, I am excited to continue to grow and add to my palette.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
Being God-fearing, dependable, honest, hard-working, and jolly has been and will continue to be the biggest contributors to my success. I come from a Christian family who taught me to put my faith in God, pray daily, and treat people with grace and kindness. I have always been a hard-working and independent person. I’m a go getter by nature, so since I refuse to fail, I know I won’t. On top of that, I have a personality that draws people in. I love what I do, and it shows through how I treat my clients, potential clients, and everyday encounters.
