Today we’d like to introduce you to Shelton Walker.
Hi Shelton, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, you could tell our readers some of your backstory.
We started Hightop Sports 3 years ago on June 6th. I started this company with the cohost of our show, Stephen Hawley. We began by doing weekly shows in the studio I built at my house, then upgraded to making a live show so we could get to know the people watching us more. Before the second year ended, we started doing a show consistently every week on Wednesday live at 8:35. For quite some time, we sat around 100 subs but slowly grew and just eclipsed 15k subs last month with 5 million views on YouTube and 10 million on tiktok.
It wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It’s been challenging for sure. One of our challenges at first was the name. We were actually called BDE, known as Big Dick Energy. You can see the challenge that entails. We realized. Quickly, if we wanted to be marketable, we needed a change. We pulled a Baltimore Colts and did overnight and never looked back. Patience was another big one. We stayed true to ourselves and believed that what we produced each week was good and that, given enough time, people would enjoy our content and become part of the family. Nowadays, we all want things to be instant, but I’ve learned during this journey that God has a plan, and I truly believe that he will lay out that plan once you can handle it.
Let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
We specialize in college football news and NFL news. Its primary function is a podcast/fanatic show where we gather and provide updates and opinions on the different sports teams: Florida Gators and Jacksonville Jaguars. I am most proud of the community that we have built through the show. The amount of people who show up religiously for our weekly show is something special and humbling each week they show up.
Any big plans?
Our goal is to continue to grow our fan base and expand into more sports and sport-driven content with players, teams, coaches, etc. We want to be a top destination for sports consumption like the world’s Josh Pates and Pat McAfee. The world is moving away from traditional media like ESP and Fox, and we want to be a part of that change.
