Conversations with Stacey Sather

Today we’d like to introduce you to Stacey Sather.

Hi Stacey; please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I began drawing and painting when I was eight years old. I went on to get my Bachelor of Fine Arts degree which required me to take photography courses; this all took place in the pre-digital age. I then began my career in graphic design, which eventually involved Apple computers and Adobe software, where I became proficient in Photoshop and Lightroom. I tried out a digital camera at one point and fell in love with capturing the moment I was experiencing, knowing how I’d process it in Lightroom to reproduce what I saw and felt. I print all my images on canvas to bring the entire process back to my fine art beginnings.

We all face challenges, but would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I got serious about photography in 2008 when I moved to St. Augustine. It’s been a long journey, from when I first fell in love with photography to getting back into it. In between that time, I raised a family, maintained a design career, and began a freelance design business. Since I thought of photography as more of a passion than a financial endeavor, I got set aside while focusing on the other areas of my life. The other challenge was the continuous desire for creative freedom and the need to satisfy that. I was selling my creativity short by not keeping up with my painting. Since getting back into photography, I no longer feel that way. It is a wonderful outlet for my creativity.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
SGS Design & Art is my freelance business. I began doing publication design and paste-up by hand (pre-computers). I eventually evolved my business into creating hardcover museum exhibition catalogs, interpretive panels, museum graphics, and exhibition photography. A few of my favorite projects include two hardcover exhibition catalogs for the Cici and Hyatt Brown “Reflections” collections; the interpretive panels and labels for the St. Augustine Pirate & Treasure Museum; the “Hotel Ponce de Leon, The Architecture & Decoration” and “Flagler College, The First Fifty Years” hardcover books; and the interpretive panels and labels, murals and photography for the American Prohibition Museum in Savannah, Georgia. Currently, I focus my time on my fine art photography. My creative journey goal is to continue sharing my images online, in galleries, at art shows, and in markets.

We all have different ways of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
For me, success is being able to spend my time doing what I love and being able to share the outcome with others. Everyone needs to spend more time outside, enjoying the beauty of nature. I hope to share the moments I experience and inspire others to do the same. We’re all better off for those moments.
