Today we’d like to introduce you to Mary Gerlach.
Hi Mary, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, let’s briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
Like so many, I was from the northeast, studied art in Connecticut, taught art and photography for thirty years, then met the love of my life and wanted an adventure. We moved to central Florida twenty years ago and enjoyed the “sunshine state”! Art Education was still in my blood professionally, so I spent a few years of teaching in the visual arts department at Daytona State College. It was then connected to the artist community of New Smyrna Beach, Florida. At this time, I turned the switch to more time for my artistic pursuits and minimum for teaching; presently, I paint in my studio space at The Hub On Canal, 132 Canal St., New Smyrna Beach, FL, and provide painting foundations classes at the Artists Workshop and The Hub. My home studio is always very busy, with paintings in progress and sketches for new works, including commissions. Loving life and all things Florida are my primary interests for my art, with some work from world travels. My artistic goal is to be a strong visual communicator.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Struggles, haha. Of course, financial means are generally a struggle for artists, so it takes a lifetime trying to make ends meet! I feel blessed that helping others learn to paint and share the understanding of problem-solving issues that accompany being a painter has given me joy and continues the learning experience for me.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Follow my heart. I teach this message to students to select topics and images they connect to, as this is my intention. I also understand composition and color, and visual impact help to create. Repeating all things, Florid is still my biggest influence. Living in paradise (New Smyrna Beach) helps a lot; beach scenes, palm trees, and Florida floral are a few of my themes.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Living, working, and volunteering in an amazing artist community helps me as an artist.
