Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Collins.
Hi Jennifer, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I am an up-and-coming photographer. I started my journey by taking photos while I went on trips with my family or with my school. I’d take photos of everything: plants, people, buildings, signs, or anything that caught my eye. I always had the ‘creative eye,’ and I’ve chased that passion my whole life. I started taking my work seriously when I started receiving requests from paying clients. I continue to chase my passion and improve myself every step of the way. My photography has been featured in almost 20 exhibitions worldwide (the first feature was in Manila, Philippines, and my most recent was in Athens, Greece). I still take photos everywhere I go, but I’ve been approved since my days back in high school.
Please talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned. Looking back, has it been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Not. The hardest thing continues to be not underselling myself for my work. I produce phenomenal works, but I usually charge next to nothing for them. I have had clients not respect me because of my lower-than-expected rates. I have also volunteered to ‘get my name out there’ with larger companies who have used most (or all!) photos I took for the company without any mention or credit given to me online. It is hard trying to promote yourself in a vicious market that doesn’t value the amount of marketing, money, and manpower it takes to do what I do. I love the competition, but pricing yourself competitively while still trying to garner respect and receiving credit is much more difficult than I ever expected.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I will proudly claim that I am a jack of all trades and a master of none. I’ll take photos of anything that catches my eye or interests me, but I will admit I have my preferences. My favorite thing to shoot is broadly called ‘event photography’ I love taking photos of concerts, parties, marathons, engagements, or anything of the sort. I enjoy taking candid and ‘artsy’ photos during events. The most popular works are usually from my travels- landscapes or candid portraiture. I am proud of how far my work is being spread with art exhibitions. I have had around 75 uses of my photos in exhibits worldwide, which is mind-boggling. The quality and quantity of my work and affordability set me apart from others doing the same thing right now.
Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
